If you live in a private house, then you have probably thought more than once about decorating your living space under the roof. Today, in the attic, people strive to make the room as cozy and comfortable as possible.
When organizing the attic space, special attention should be paid to decorating window openings. If you need visual inspiration, then this article is for you - we present a large number of stunning loft curtains.
Color of curtains for the attic
Darker window curtains add a special accent to any living space, while lighter products make the room feel more spacious. Color choice is incredibly important. Soft, warm shades create a sunny atmosphere, cool shades help you relax, and a bright palette refreshes the room, giving it a unique character. These rules should apply to all interiors in your home, including the attic.
Roller blinds for attic windows
Many designers claim that regular curtains are not suitable for roof windows. Luckily, you can choose roller shutters. Once you have decided on the type of roller blinds, you can choose a color. If the attic room faces east, it is advisable to choose a thicker fabric that will protect you from the dazzling sunlight in the morning. If the windows face north or there is a large building nearby that limits access to natural light, then you should consider brighter curtains. You can also choose pleated curtains.
Windows in the attic are an invaluable way to allow daylight into the interior. But sometimes there can be too much light. Roller shutters are ideal for your windows. They are great for blocking light in the early summer hours or helping people with night shifts fall asleep.
Attic roller blinds
First of all, materials of this type are used in windows of non-standard shape. Rolled products touch the window closely. Materials of a transparent, white or bed shade will be almost invisible on the window and will not violate the concept of the entire room. However, for those who like brighter colors, there is a large selection of products in different color shades. Often the canvas is made from linen, silk, cotton, and satin. But there are products made from expensive fabric, they have an excellent level of resistance to external factors such as dust, moisture, sunlight, etc.
Roller blinds are equipped with special mechanisms that are responsible for raising and lowering the curtains. This mechanism allows you to fix the canvas on a window of different positions and any shape. In addition, it is quite convenient to open the window with them. For control, a standard chain or a spring element is used. By the way, this option is more reliable and convenient.
To remove dust from the surface of roller blinds, use a brush or vacuum cleaner. However, if the canvas is too dirty, use a sponge and soapy water. It is also recommended to lubricate the roller blind mechanism with special silicone solutions from time to time. Apply these tips and your curtains will always have a clean, decent and attractive look.
Curtains on sloping roof windows
Currently, the market is full of a wide variety of window solutions. You can find almost any color, pattern and length. This allows you to choose the right curtains. A sloped ceiling adds character to a room, but can complicate the decorating process. If the window is located between two slanted walls, you can think about how to cover the opening from the sun's rays. Below are some ideas on how to deal with these problems.
Tip #1
First you need to understand what the purpose of window curtains is. Do you need privacy or a purely decorative element? Is this something you want to highlight or hide?

Curtains on attic windows with a sloping ceiling: highlighting the advantages
Enhance the many benefits of sloped ceilings by adding additional windows to the attic, which allow for ample natural ventilation. This is the easiest and best way to relieve the claustrophobic feeling that can come from having a sloping ceiling. Modern skylights in the attic today come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They add a beautiful touch to a room even after sunset, bringing the look of the night sky into the room.
Roman blinds for roof windows
Supporters of minimalism and lightness should decorate sloping windows exclusively with Roman blinds. The secret of success lies in the fact that the curtains are fixed using an inclined rail. Other installation options involve the use of metal guides.
If you plan to place the oriental variety of Roman blinds at an angle, then in this case you need to make an additional rail with your own hands.
If we talk about the advantages of fabric, then designers focus on the characteristics listed below:
- Easy to use - you can switch modes with one movement;
- Possibility of repeated closing and opening without loss of original characteristics;
- Any types of Roman blinds are easy to care for;
- Even in strong winds the design will not get tangled;
- Minimal visual load on the available space;
- No excessive darkening.
The use of Roman blinds is justified when the emphasis is on simplicity and airiness of forms. A correctly installed design, on the one hand, is practically invisible, and, on the other, allows you to regulate the amount of light entering the room.
Curtains on the wall to decorate the attic
If you want to hide the space on the wall between the windows, consider hanging the canvas along the surface. Decorating a wall with curtains can make a room feel more traditional. Place curtains as additional or main decoration.
Curtains on the attic windows are a great opportunity to refresh the attic space of your home. Curtains will serve not only as a decorative, but also as a practical element of the interior, allowing you to regulate the flow of light, and, consequently, your mood and well-being during the day.
Types of curtains
Of all the available varieties of existing curtains, several are suitable for decorating roof windows. It is immediately worth noting the inappropriateness of complex designs with an abundance of draperies and folds. If you really want to hang models with cornices on such windows, their upper part should not have a complex cut. It is enough for it to be without tails, straight, made of hard textile, securely fastened on both sides. In addition, the panels themselves must have lower fastenings, due to which they must cover the window openings without falling down due to the inclined plane of the slope.
However, these models cannot be called the best solution for roof windows. They are inconvenient and create a certain visual bulk, even if they are made of thin textiles. In order for them to look beautiful and appropriate, the size of the windows themselves should not be small.
If we talk about the best options, it is worth noting roller blinds, pleated curtains and Roman curtains.
Rolled
Roller blinds are textiles of predominantly synthetic origin, wound on a shaft with a lifting device. At the bottom of the panel there are special weighting agents in the form of plates. Depending on the variety of models, structures of this type can be open or closed. They are better suited for sloping windows than others.
They can be fixed using aluminum guides, installing them on the frame, or by fastening them with hooks. The first option is better because it has no gaps and is suitable for different window positions. The second is limited to three positions. There is no other way to fix the curtain here.
Pleated
Curtains of this type resemble blinds, only instead of plastic they have ironed folds made of textiles. Their width may vary, depending on the type of model. As a rule, curtain panels of this type have aluminum profiles located in the upper and lower parts. Their central part has guide strings that prevent the curtains from sagging.
These models are intended for windows with an angle range from 0 to 90 degrees. Depending on the complexity of the design, these products can have 1, 2 or 3 layers, which are folded. Multilayer options in cross-section resemble honeycombs; this cut makes these curtains heat and sound insulating. These options are suitable for non-standard windows, including triangular, pentagonal, hexagonal and trapezoidal window openings.
The price of pleated curtains is higher than their roll counterparts; you cannot sew them at home, which is partly hampered by the purchase of manufacturing materials.
They can close not only from top to bottom, but also from bottom to top. If desired, they can cover one central part of the window. They are controlled either manually or via a control panel.
Roman
These options can be called an alternative to roller blinds and pleated blinds. This design is also non-standard; it is suitable for oblique windows. The advantage of such curtains is the ability to change the material, which opens up a lot of design possibilities. If the fabric has become unusable or you simply want to change its color and print, you can do this at home without any effort.
The only thing is that stretchy and heavy materials are not suitable for their manufacture. In general, they can be made on a lining. The design features of the curtains include rigid slats on the reverse side, as well as weights, due to which the curtain looks taut and even. During the folding process, it forms identical, even folds. Among other features, we can note different methods of opening and fixing the curtains themselves.
On the cornice
Such options may differ in the type of cornice: it can be round, profile, rail, or string. The rod of such products can be made of wood, steel, or brass. Unlike classic cornices, profile cornices are more functional than decorative. Despite the fact that they are mainly hidden behind the folds of curtains, they can be of any length.
Curtains on round cornices are the least suitable for decorating attic windows. Their length cannot be adjusted to the characteristics of small attic windows. In order for such curtains to fit the size of the windows, you often have to shorten the curtain rod yourself. Regarding the lower tiebacks for curtains on cornices, it is worth noting: to grab the curtains decorating sheer windows, rods of a smaller diameter are purchased. Some non-standard options may have side clamps.
Tips for choosing
- To simplify the choice of curtains for decorating attic windows, it is worth taking note of several recommendations:
- It is better to buy products in light colors. They visually brighten and refresh the interior. Dark colors create a depressing effect on the perception of space.
- The shade of the curtains should contrast with the tone of the wall cladding. The texture should echo the texture of the furniture elements.
- You should not buy or sew curtains from bed linen material. It is advisable that the shades are not completely identical, as this simplifies the perception of space.
- Where there is very little height under the window, you should not hang long panels. It is unacceptable to use curtains for windows that trail along the floor (you need to pay attention to the length of the products).
- The option with eyelets over a table or bed is only possible if the length of such curtains is short.
- Not every fabric is suitable for attic curtains. It is worth excluding corduroy and velvet from the list. Tapestry and jacquard are not always appropriate here.
- You need to make a choice taking into account the upholstery material and wall texture. Prints are undesirable if the texture of the cladding has its own pattern.
- The pattern on the curtains looks good if the attic is equipped as a nursery.
- Curtain models must comply with safety regulations. They should not create obstacles to the operation of the window opening mechanism.
- It is important to consider the material of the house itself. For example, in the attic of a wooden house, simple curtain models look more harmonious.
- We must not forget about the interior style. For example, if these are modern trends, you should choose between Roman blinds, pleated or roller blinds.
- The texture of the material should be dense, but not heavy. It is good if the fabric has a small percentage of synthetic threads, which makes it more resistant to fading.
- You should not save money: you need to choose products from official suppliers of time-tested manufacturers.
- Blackout (opaque textiles) is worth buying when you need to periodically darken the room. Roller curtains with aluminum guides have this capability.
- When choosing a material, you need to pay attention to its properties: textiles that shrink and can be deformed during washing are not suitable for purchase.
How to install?
The installation of attic curtains depends on their type and the design features of the windows themselves. As an example, we can consider attaching fabric curtains with two curtain rods. The process of installing cornices will not take much time. First, install the upper rod, making sure that it is located symmetrically with respect to the upper edge of the window opening.
Make two or three holes for attaching the rod. Then a rod is installed in them and fasteners are fixed for pickup. If side fasteners are used instead of bottom fasteners, it is enough to drill one hole for each of them. The cornices are installed and secured with reliable fasteners. After they are installed, you can hang the curtains and secure them with a second curtain rod or clamp.
Roller blinds are attached to skylights in two ways, while fixing the panel at the bottom of the frame. You can install aluminum guides on the frame itself, then tuck the panel into them on the sides. This way it will fit better to the window, eliminating gaps and sagging. If the curtain design has hooks, the roll is secured at the top and then fixed during lowering in any of the three positions where there are hooks.
