Old wooden floors squeak, thump, and let sounds through, so in December 2020 we finally decided to update them. Initially, at the family council, opinions were expressed in favor of a cement floor screed. This type of coating is cheap, stable, durable and silent - just what we need! But the experts we invited for a consultation unanimously recommended not to use a screed using water on the second floor. They say that it will leak to neighbors during installation, in the future it will create a greenhouse effect, etc. Here we first heard the concept of “dry floor screed ,” which is done using technology created by the German company Knauf . The basis of bulk floors is expanded clay (small pebbles) and gypsum boards (gypsum fiber sheet).
choice: coven or company?
We didn’t dare lay such a floor ourselves, so the question arose: should we use it or contact a company? We chose the last option. Since we both work, there is absolutely no free time to organize repairs. One of the companies in our city pledged to do everything in the best possible way: professionally, efficiently, quickly. We thought about it and decided to pay a little more, but get a ready-made turnkey floor without unnecessary hassle. Not so! Today, when passions and unrest have already subsided, we are ready to make the following verdict: expectations were not met...
DRY FLOOR SCREADING: HOW IT WAS, OUR REVIEW
Nasty creaky floors lay everywhere in our two-room apartment measuring 47 square meters, except for the bathroom, balcony and toilet. We decided to eliminate the entire wooden floor, which is 42 square meters.
The contracting company undertook to meet the deadline within 2 weeks. We concluded an agreement, made an advance payment - 50% for the work plus payment for all materials according to preliminary calculations. When the floor was ready, we had to pay the second half of the amount for the work and possibly for materials if we had to buy more.
They sent one modest, frail boy of about 23 years old. They were even surprised - could this really be the master who would do everything professionally in 2 weeks. And even alone??? Our assumptions were confirmed... He coped with the dismantling quickly - the old floor in the entire apartment was removed in just a couple of days.
I sawed down the door frames so that later it would be convenient to replace them with a more modern version.
They decided to take the boards to the dacha - there was a stove there, and the floor in the barn had fallen apart. They will come in handy. Here, too, everything went smoothly: the boards were loaded into the gazelle and taken to the dacha. That's it, the apartment is empty. The work front is planned! We relaxed a little when we saw that the master was smart and responsible.
The master made the floor in the large room quickly and quite skillfully. I liked the result. It was a little scary to step onto a fresh floor for the first time - the new, unknown is always scary. We have never seen loose floors . The coating was white, smooth and hard.
We looked a little, indeed: below there is a film, then expanded clay, on top of the gvl there are slabs firmly fastened with screws and glue, and along the edges you can see the edge tape. Everything is as in the pictures and diagrams from the Internet
