Which soft beanbag chair is better, tips for choosing

Recently, frameless furniture has become quite popular. There are several reasons for this. It is mobile, easy to use, original and does not require special care.

A significant advantage is that, without special skills, anyone can make such furniture.

Today we will tell you how to sew a beanbag chair with your own hands.

Tools and materials

Due to the fact that the frameless ottoman is constantly on the floor and is actively moved, our interior detail will consist of two covers:

  • an outer case that will not be easily soiled, durable and beautiful;
  • a cover that we will fill with filler.

Oxford fabric is suitable for the outer cover (it is actively used in the manufacture of workwear), but linen, suede, upholstery fabric or eco-leather and other strong materials can also be used.

Before you make a cover for a beanbag chair with your own hands, let’s pay attention to its harmonious combination with other pieces of furniture.

For the inner cover, when choosing fabric, be guided by the fact that it must be breathable. Otherwise, the filler granules will quickly stick together due to insufficient ventilation, and the product will lose its attractiveness. Thick spunbond with holes is perfect.

To fill the beanbag chair, special polystyrene granules with a volume of at least a cube are purchased in hardware stores or on the Internet. For softness, artificial down (holofiber) is added.

Additional materials required are two strong zippers, reinforced threads, a sewing machine and tracing paper for the pattern.

On various resources on the Internet we will find a lot of photographs of bean bag chairs made by ourselves.

Advantages and disadvantages of frameless chairs

A cushion chair, a pear chair, a frameless pouf - no matter what they call a bean-bag, but one thing is obvious - this piece of furniture has its pros and cons. The obvious advantages include the following:

  • due to its structure, the chair is able to take the shape of the body of the person sitting in it and transform in any direction;
  • a bean bag chair is great for pregnant women - good back support allows you to sit in it with maximum comfort, relieving the load from the most vulnerable areas of the spine;
  • the pear chair also serves as an indispensable assistant for nursing mothers - for many, the long feeding process must be done in a comfortable and ergonomic position that will allow both the baby and the mother to relax;
  • the use of a bean bag chair in a children's room is difficult to overestimate - the object does not have sharp corners, is safe and light, able to take the shape of the child's body, giving him the opportunity to relax after a long stay at a desk or computer desk;
  • frameless furniture is very mobile, even children can change the decor of their room by moving a bean bag chair indoors;
  • The abundance of shapes, sizes and design options for covers allows the owner of an apartment or house decorated in almost any interior style to find their own option;
  • the ability to clean the removable cover at home (machine washable) makes this interior element incredibly practical;
  • the ability to quickly change color accents, and therefore the entire image of the room, by simply changing the cover;
  • bean-bag is filled with polystyrene foam balls (usually) - and this is a practical, safe and comfortable material;
  • frameless chairs can be used in almost any room of the home and even outside it - organizing a relaxation corner is incredibly simplified with the help of a bean bag chair; you just need to place it along with a light source and any objects for studying (book stands or coffee table).

But, like any other piece of furniture, the pear chair has its drawbacks:

  • the chair has no legs, the lower part constantly rubs against the floor covering, which means that the cover can quickly become unusable;
  • polystyrene foam balls wrinkle and transform over time - you need to buy additional filler and add it to the bag (but this disadvantage can easily be turned into an advantage - the bag will “grow” with your child);
  • not every interior style accepts the use of frameless furniture - in a classic design such a piece of furniture will look out of place.

As you can see, bean-bags have many more advantages than disadvantages. All that remains is to decide in which room you can use this stylish and original piece of furniture.

Chair shape and dimensions

It all depends only on our imagination and interior design style. The main simplest forms are “bucket” and “drop”.

But a ball-shaped chair is a little more difficult to manufacture, since there are much more parts.

Patterns for sewing and master classes on making bean bag chairs of various shapes with your own hands are available in abundance on the World Wide Web.

As for the dimensions, you should not make the chair too miniature, even if the room is cramped.

A hand-sewn children's seat bag should have a diameter of about 70 cm; for a teenager, 80 cm will be optimal; for an adult, the diameter of the chair will be more than 90 cm.

The main advantages of a bean bag chair

Mobility and lack of rigid shape

speak for themselves: these qualities make it possible to quickly change the situation. The bag chair can be easily dragged from place to place with virtually no effort, and without harm to the floor covering. For small rooms, this will save space and eliminate additional furniture elements. One bean bag chair can be dragged from a reading corner - a shelf with books and a floor lamp - to a work desk or a place in front of the TV. Among other aspects, it is also a cost-effective solution. Due to its compact size, you can store several bean bags in case guests arrive. For example, for watching a football match together or for gatherings with board games.

or refresh it seasonally - replace the cover of the bean bag chair. After all, such a chair in the interior is a bright accessory that attracts attention. Now on the market there are beanbags of various colors and shapes, with original paintings, with covers of unusual textures, with prints and even reproductions of famous paintings directly on the fabric.

Changing the cover takes no more than ten minutes, which means you can often change the environment and use the chair for color accents.

Benefit for health

– another advantage of a bean bag chair. The materials used to produce beanbags are non-toxic - of course, when it comes to responsible and trusted manufacturers of frameless furniture. Such furniture easily takes on the contours of the human body, allows you to avoid overloading the spine, and is indispensable for those who spend a lot of time at their desk. Due to its safety and non-traumatic nature, a bean bag chair is ideal for decorating a children's room. In addition, removable covers are easy to clean if necessary.

For it, we will need to cut out two circles with a diameter of 80 and 70 cm from tracing paper, as well as a rectangle with an internal parabola. The length of the rectangle is 260 cm, the width is 110 cm, the height of the narrowest part is 40 cm.

On the fabrics for both covers we will cut out the parts according to the pattern.

First we sew the inner cover, leaving the hole unstitched. Through it we will turn the product inside out, fill it with granules and stitch it to the end.

During manufacturing, we sew a zipper into the outer cover.

IMPORTANT: how to make the filler softer and more durable? For the beanbag chair that we made with our own hands, we will take a combined filler: 70% polystyrene foam and 30% holofiber.

Process steps

Any craftswoman can sew a universal bean bag chair with her own hands, and a detailed description of the stages of the work process will help with this. First of all, a suitable pattern is selected, tools and materials are prepared. After this, cutting, sewing and stuffing is carried out. The final stage will be decorating the finished product.

Cutting out the parts

You can make bean bag chair patterns yourself or find ready-made ones on various online resources or in magazines. Experts recommend using textiles with parameters of 1.5x3 m. In such an area you can easily place 6 wedges for the sides of the chair and a couple more hexagons for the top and bottom. The transfer of the drawing to the material is carried out as follows:

  • lay out two wedges and a small hexagon in the upper right corner;
  • in the next strip there will be two more wedges, but inverted in relation to the first ones, half of a large hexagon;
  • the third row consists of a pair of wedges and the second half of a hexagon.

When transferring bean bag chair elements onto fabric, it is necessary to allow seam allowances (at least 1.5 cm). It is convenient to draw on dark matter with a piece of chalk or soap. It is not recommended to use colored markers for these purposes, since lines may appear on the top cover, especially if it is made of light textile.

Sewing the product

The easiest way to sew a pear chair is using a sewing machine, then the stitches will look most neat and attractive. Manual work will take much more time, and it looks attractive only if you have experience in such work. Step-by-step instructions will help you connect the parts of the chair sequentially:

  1. Sew together two parts of a large hexagon. It is important to do this so that its total length is 40 cm, consistent with the rest of the sides.
  2. 6 sidewalls are connected in series, without stitching the extreme sides.
  3. Hexagons are fixed in the upper and lower parts.
  4. A zipper is inserted into the open seams, the ends of the fastener are hidden inside the cover.

A simple manufacturing method will help novice craftswomen avoid many mistakes. It consists in the fact that first you need to sew the inner cover of the bean bag chair, then the outer one. The work of sewing parts together will be convenient and of high quality if a detailed diagram with dimensions is taken as a basis.

Stuffing with filler

The features of filling a bean bag chair with your own hands will depend on the chosen filling. The most commonly used materials are:

  1. Expanded polystyrene. To fill a large inner case with XL parameters, about 450 liters of raw materials will be required.
  2. Old things. They must not only be torn into small pieces, but also placed inside the cover in layers. Otherwise, the material will be distributed unevenly and will protrude or bulge on the surface of the bean bag chair.
  3. Sintepon. The most comfortable material to work with. Its advantages: light weight, easy to install.

Variety of IKEA armchairs, basic designs and iconic models

If a do-it-yourself case is filled with bulk materials, you must act very carefully so as not to scatter small granules. It is recommended to tightly connect the filler bag to the hole and sprinkle the material with water (it’s easiest to do the job with two people). In a similar way, biological raw materials are poured into the bean bag: buckwheat, peas and legumes.

The most common volume of such chairs is 350 liters. However, it is necessary to remember about shrinkage, so a new product will require about 400–500 liters of raw materials. For children's models - 200 l.

Decoration

After the soft pillow is ready, you need to pay attention to its appearance. A thing made with your own hands can become a real work of art, you just need to use your own imagination. Thus, denim models can be decorated with bright pockets.

On a chair that is used as a gift, you can put a beautiful photo print of a family member or your favorite pet. Stylish oval products made of velvet or plush are complemented with fringe, bows, and ruffles.

A children's bean bag chair can be not only comfortable, but also educational. It is decorated with stripes in the form of letters and numbers. Decorations must be attractive and colorful.

Having figured out how to make a stylish bean bag chair with your own hands at home, you can diversify the interior of your apartment. Such furniture will bring a touch of coziness and comfort to it. Frameless models, made from high-quality materials, last a long time and provide good rest for all family members.

We will need:

  • fabric for outer and inner covers;
  • lightning;
  • filler;
  • reinforced thread.
  • sewing machine.

Let's cut out wedges for the sides according to the drawing. The height of the wedges is 130 cm, dimensions are 20*50*40 cm and they look like petals.

The top and base of the chair are also not needed. To do this, we need two hexagons with sides of 20 (for the top) and 40 cm (for the bottom). We sew the wedges together along the side lines.

Sew the top hexagon completely, and the bottom one, leaving one edge free. Through this hole we turn our product inside out.

We fill the inner cover with filler and sew the hole closed with a blind seam by hand. In the outer case, we sew a zipper in this place, put it on the bag with the filling and fasten the zipper.

Since we will be making a bean bag chair in the shape of a ball for a child’s room, we will choose a different color for each detail. Don't forget about lightning.

We found the sewing pattern for the parts and the exact dimensions of the pattern in RuNet.

You can sew a ball only from pentagons. To do this, we will cut out 12 parts with ribs 34 cm long. The allowance is already included in this size. The sewing pattern is also available on the Internet.

So difficult, we only sew OUTER COVERS. For the inner one, we simply sew the fabric in the shape of a ball.

Frameless chair design

For the children's room we choose cheerful colorful colors. Bags can be sewn in the shape of flowers, animals, vegetables and fruits.

The absence of sharp corners makes this furniture the safest for children. For upholstery, use eco-leather, then the ottoman will be easy to clean from dirt.

For the bedroom, you can make upholstery from natural materials - linen or cotton.

For the living room, depending on the interior design, the armchair bag can be decorated with leather, fur, or even a knitted cover made of yarn.

As you can see, making an original and practical pouf is not difficult. This piece of furniture will only add personality and comfort to the room.

Who said that a bean bag chair is only equal to a pear chair?

Who said that a bean bag chair = only a pear chair?

It's no secret that bean bags appeared in Italy in the second half of the 20th century. In Italy, this frameless furniture was originally called Sacco (bag), in America - Bean Bag - literally “bag of beans”. Bean bag chairs got their name thanks to the filling - creative designers filled them with beans or buckwheat (and the Italians generally wanted to fill them with water at first).

Over time, technology advanced and all bean bags began to be stuffed with light polystyrene balls. This gave the products the necessary lightness and greater comfort.

In addition to technology, design thought has also advanced. And bean bags acquired new interesting shapes: flower, pyramid, ottoman, mat, pillow, pear and many others. By the way, the bean bag chair (so common in our country) is just another branch in the orthodox direction of bean bag chairs. In other words, a pear chair is another option, another possible form of a bean bag chair.

At first, beanbag chairs were made in the shape of bags, but very quickly the designers decided to slightly extend the “tail” of the bag for the head and the result was a shape that we call a pear.

What's the difference you ask? Apart from the original idea, the main difference lies in the ergonomics of the frameless chair. A pear chair is quite limited in the degree of padding - for this model to be comfortable, the degree of padding should be average or even minimal, as a result, the seating position is often low, and you have to sit almost “on the floor”.

For my part, I am a supporter of the classical approach and prefer the original form - a bean bag chair. This form, in my opinion, has many advantages: firstly, several seating options - you can sit in the center of the bag and then the seating is high enough to sit at a computer desk. But in this position, the back support only reaches the middle of the spine. To “drown” entirely in the bag, it is better to sit a little closer to the edge of the bag and then your back will be completely supported by the bag. By the way, the dimensions of a bean bag chair (base diameter and height) can vary depending on the height of the customer and the spaciousness of the home - you can make a large and tall chair that even a tall adult man will fit in it entirely, including his head and back.

Secondly, the bean bag chair is more compact, because takes the form of a person sitting down only when landing, and then his back swells slightly. In many other varieties (including the pears that we sew), the shape is preset, as a result of which the chair takes up more space.

Thirdly, the center of gravity and the shape of each part of a classic bean bag chair are very proportional and symmetrical to each other, resulting in a stable bean bag chair. Thanks to this, the landing is confident, you will not fall or tip back, completely relaxed. Some other models (including the pear chair), due to the peculiarities of the shape itself, do not provide this balance and if the landing is unsuccessful, you can fall back.

But this does not mean that all other models are bad! To paraphrase what has already become a catchphrase, I will say that “different chairs are needed, different chairs are important.”

And each model is interesting in its own way.

And this post is just intended to bring a touch of justice to the original origin of bean bag chairs and debunk the myth that in its original origins Bean Bag meant a pear and was named so in honor of this particular fruit. The pear chair is an exclusively Russian name, which is not the original, but a variation (or variety) of the bean bag chair.
