My big IKEA love is the Strandmon chair. From the very first sight it was on my wish list. And now I’m enthusiastically looking for a place for him in my small studio apartment and an extra 13 thousand rubles.
The yellow IKEA Strandmon chair is the most popular among other options.
The price is not small at all. To be more precise, its cost in the official catalog is currently 12,999 rubles for models with textile upholstery. Is it worth the money? I thought that perhaps I would find negative reviews and after reading them I would refuse to purchase. I did find a few comments, but how significant they are is up to you to decide. In the meantime, let's talk about its sizes and color options.
Strandmon first appeared in the ikea range in the 1950s. And 60 years later it returned to sale again without losing its relevance.
Choosing the optimal and comfortable chair model
What distinguishes an armchair from a chair is convenience and comfort. There must be a soft seat and back, comfortable armrests, and sometimes even a footrest. The product is arranged so that a person can take the most relaxed position and stretch his legs to rest. Therefore, it is not very convenient to use the product as a chair; it has a different purpose.
A living room chair in a modern or classic style can have a very different design and shape.
Classification by size
The more spacious the living room, the more massive furniture can be used to decorate it. However, small spaces require compact models.
- Mini-chairs for the living room - have minimal dimensions, which, however, provide convenience. The main difference from the standard one is the low back and placement of the armrests. The latter are located above the seat, and not on the sides, so the total width of a small living room chair does not exceed 70 cm.
- A standard chair reaches a width of at least 90 cm. Here you can sit not only in an anatomically correct position, but also with your legs bent. The backrest is high enough for you to completely rest your back on it. The support for the standard model can be ordinary legs or a base with a drawer that serves as storage for some things.
- A large chair provides maximum comfort: the highest backrest on which you can rest not only your back but also your head, wide soft armrests, and a retractable footrest.
Often large models are folding; a mini-bar can be located under the armrest.
Design features
In fact, a comfortable chair can easily replace a sofa. To place such an attractive piece of furniture in a living room of any size or configuration, a variety of designs have been developed.
- The classic model is a seat with a soft back on legs or on a base . A more convenient option is furniture with armrests, as they provide support for the arms. However, in small rooms it is recommended to use armchairs without armrests, as they are more compact and look elegant and light.
- Recliner is a special model with an adjustable backrest angle and a retractable footrest . The advertiser unfolds using buttons or from the remote control. This option provides maximum comfort and is primarily intended for pregnant women and people suffering from spinal diseases.
- The chair-bed in the living room is equipped with a folding mechanism, which allows you to turn the seat into a comfortable bed at night. As a rule, such models are quite large, since the bed obtained during transformation must be at least 80 cm wide.
- Corner chairs in the living room - have a special shape, which allows you to install the products in the corner. This is a good solution for a small living room.
- A hanging chair in the living room is the most modern option. This product does not have a support, but is fixed to the ceiling, like a swing. As a rule, the model is made of rattan or polyurethane. However, the shape can be very different and the area too: in the largest options, 3-4 people can easily fit.

- Frameless models (bean bag chairs) can also only be used in modern design. Their convenience lies in the fact that such a product takes the shape of the human body.
- A chair with a rocking mechanism is the best option for relaxation. Measured rocking promotes not only physical, but also nervous relaxation. In addition, this model helps to get rid of insomnia.

Almost any design, except for frameless models, can be made in a variety of styles and have a variety of configurations.
Hanging chairs in the interior of the house
This option of armchairs is not used very often, but it can perfectly enliven a room, making it not only bright and attractive, but also cozy.
Unusual hanging chair in interior design
The very idea of hanging chairs is related to the fact that a person psychologically feels very comfortable in a “cocoon”. This is how, hiding absolutely from the whole world, you can spend hours on end reading your favorite book, listening to music, or just dreaming about the eternal.
Fashionable interior ideas with hanging chair
There are mainly two types of such chairs:
- Hanging chairs to the ceiling. This option is mounted directly to the ceiling and looks very impressive in any interior. It looks like a long but thin-looking chain or cable holds a large chair that can support the weight of a person. The main important factor in this option will be the correct fastening and mounting of the hook with the entire adjacent structure.

- Chairs on the counter. This option will be more mobile and will be able to migrate around the premises of your rooms.

There are no special aspects to install or use, you just need to have enough free space to place it.
In which design direction is it better to choose a chair?
An armchair in an interior with a living room, if not a stylistic accent, then complements the design of the home. At the same time, upholstered furniture must have an appropriate design and design.
Chairs and armchairs in a classic living room have a traditional shape: a seat, a high back, armrests and legs, usually of a bizarre shape. They can be folding and even recliners, but they must retain a fairly rigid shape.
Modern armchairs are much more convenient for the home - frameless or of an unusual shape that allows you to take any position on the seat. However, this model does not allow for such a rich finish.
The unusual configuration of living room chairs in high-tech, futurism, and vintage styles turns this furniture into an interesting element of the interior. In such cases, you need to pay attention not only to the shape, but also to the finishing of the product.
An armchair in the living room, in addition, should form a single harmonious whole with a sofa, if there is one in the room.
Classic
Classic armchairs for the living room are necessarily frame products with a high back and armrests. They are quite large in size, so it is easy to fit a storage box here.
An armchair with a high back for a classic living room is decorated relatively modestly: a minimum of carving, no gilding or shiny varnish. For upholstery, natural leather, velvet or jacquard is preferable. Particular attention is paid to materials: wood and finishing fabric must be of the highest quality.
Provence
Stylish armchairs in the Provence living room are forged turned items with a soft seat and back. They have considerable weight, so they are not suitable for every room, but they also make an amazing impression.
Less effective, but no less beautiful, is the option with light models made of white wood and a low back. Armrests are a must for this style.

Empire style
Empire style is a type of classical style. A lounge chair in the Empire style has a more interesting shape: rounded contours, a high and wide back, armrests decorated with carved wood, and curved legs.
The carving here is allowed to be more intricate, and for upholstery you can use more luxurious materials: corduroy, velvet, tapestry fabric embroidered with flowers and gold threads.

Modern
This style has many varieties, so products of a wide variety of types are classified as modern.
- The most famous concept, close to constructivism, is a light chair without armrests, on high legs, with a flat but angled back. Such products are ideal for a small room.
- Modernism in its original meaning presupposes asymmetry. Models in this style, although they retain their proportions, can include unexpected solutions. For example, an asymmetrical backrest, armrests located at different levels.

- Another option is bright colors. With a strict and simple form, Art Nouveau allows for the use of very unusual finishes: from painting the wooden frame in different colors to asymmetrical floral patterns on the upholstery.
Baroque
This style involves maximum luxury design. The basis is a classic model, preferably a throne - massive, heavy, on a base or on short legs.
Large armchairs for the Baroque style living room are decorated to the maximum: expensive wood is polished and coated with shiny varnish. Carving and gilding are readily used. The most luxurious upholstery is chosen: genuine leather, trimmed in some decorative way, richly embroidered fabric, gold brocade.
High tech
High-tech products can take on the most bizarre shapes. On the one hand, the style emphasizes utilitarianism, on the other, it points to the triumph of modern technology.
Lightweight living room chairs are made of a metal frame and transparent plastic. All-metal models are also common. At the same time, the shape of the seat and backrest is so anatomically correct that it allows you to sit in the chairs with minimal comfort.
A product made of wood with upholstery most often has a regular, but unusual rounded shape. The finish is necessarily monochromatic, but can be very bright and contrast with other upholstered furniture.

Art Deco
Such armchairs have become fashionable in the living room due to the fact that they are very diverse. In fact, art deco allows for any form of product, from a completely traditional frame to a modern curvilinear configuration.
A mandatory element of style is luxurious design. In art deco, shine is especially welcome. If the furniture is wooden, then the wood must be polished and varnished. Carving, however, is not allowed. If the model is soft, then it is better to choose shiny fabric for the upholstery.

In any case, no matter what model you choose and where you place it, you should always focus on the overall picture in the setting, as well as the functionality and comfort in using any of the furniture options.
Which seat upholstery should you prefer?
A soft seat and back are an essential part of the chair. Accordingly, finishing turns into one of the most important design elements. Both the texture of the fabric and its color and pattern matter.
- The most luxurious soft chairs in the living room are products upholstered in genuine leather . This material is extremely durable, beautiful, elegant and emphasizes wealth like no other. Leather is indispensable for products in the classic, baroque, retro, art deco, and hi-tech styles.
- For a cozy chair in the living room, it is better to choose velor, corduroy or velvet . Fleecy fabrics are warm and soft to the touch, creating an extraordinary feeling of homely warmth. At the same time, in terms of effectiveness, they are not much inferior to the skin.
- Jacquard is the most popular fabric for decoration . It is very durable, resistant to mechanical damage, and reproduces the most complex ornaments. The pattern is embossed, which makes the finish more expressive.
- Scotchgard is a modification of jacquard treated with special water-repellent agents. An excellent option for a large family or a family with numerous pets.
- Brocade and silk are shiny, pleasant to the touch fabrics, durable and very beautiful . Alas, both silk and brocade are sensitive to mechanical damage, but in a living room in the Empire, Baroque or Mediterranean style, they will look great.
- Chenille is a combined fabric . One of the threads is fluffy, so the material has a small pile. Affordable and very popular option.
Combination of a yellow sofa with other colors
Let's look at the contrasting compositions first. The combination with purple is very warm and cozy. Lilac and blackberry details, although just as bright, set off the yellowness. For this technique, use purple curtains or carpet, decorative pillows with lilac shades:.

Another striking contrast is when paired with blue. It is often used in a children's room. Both of these colors actively compete in attracting attention, but at the same time compensate each other: blue promotes concentration, and yellow calms and relaxes. In the living room you can lay a carpet in this color.
The black and yellow combination with a transition to gold is traditional for art deco or pop art in the interior. The darkness of the black walls will be brightened by bright yellow upholstered furniture and a chandelier with a golden glow.
Combining with green, although it seems bright, in lighter shades will add natural warmth and freshness. Rich green decorative pillows will subtly break up the bright canary sofa.
Now let's move on to a calmer range. A yellow sofa on a white background is the safest combination option.
A softer combination of sand and beige will calm the living room both in a classic style and in the opposite retro and modern styles.
It is very easy to combine sunny with gray in the interior - these colors complement each other perfectly. A yellow sofa against a background or carpet will not lose its individuality, but it will not look like a tasteless stain. A gray carpet with fluffy pile and sofa cushions in gray tones will successfully complement a sunny set of upholstered furniture.
Another softer combination is in a blue interior. It is typical for a classic interior, marine style or modern.
A sofa in a soft sunny shade is suitable for any style and any room, be it a living room or a children's room, a bedroom or a dining room. Add woody shades and soft pinks if pure yellow seems boring to you.
The combination with red is inherent in oriental design. This interior is reminiscent of the harems of oriental sheikhs, the budars of Arab beauties, hookah rooms and a teahouse.

How can you complement the chair?
Despite the variety of designs, the chairs can be further modified.
- The most requested feature is the retractable footrest . The ability to place your feet higher and rest them turns the seat into a comfortable couch.
- Reclining backrest is most often found in recliners, but there are other options. The backrest tilt can be adjusted manually or using the remote control.
- Swivel chairs are less common in the living room , as they are more suitable for a study. This model easily rotates 360 degrees.
- The rocking mechanism is found not only in the classic rocking chair. Modern technologies make it possible to include such a function in a seat of any configuration.
- Kitchen dining chairs are more like chairs : the seat height is sufficient to make it comfortable to sit at the table. They always have less functionality, but they can be equipped with drawers for storing utensils.
Dimensions
From the picture or photo it seems that the chair is quite large. It may also seem bulky due to the headrest. But in reality it is very compact. See the table below for its parameters.
Width | Depth | Height | Seat width | Seat depth | Seat height |
In centimeters | |||||

Materials
A good quality chair frame is made of wood or metal. Wooden elements can be as open as possible, decorated with decor, carvings, and varnished to demonstrate the natural beauty of the material. Metal - most often steel with anti-corrosion protection. Other, more budget-friendly options for making chair bases:
- Chipboard (chipboard) is much cheaper in cost, has good strength characteristics, but due to the presence of toxic substances (formaldehyde) it requires special attention to its characteristics. The E1 or ESuper marking is required (for seats made in Europe).
- MDF (medium-density fiberboard) - the shavings in it are ground into a smaller fraction, and harmless paraffin and lignin are used as glue. The cost of the material is 30–50% higher than chipboard, but it tolerates moisture better. At the same time, it is much cheaper and lighter than natural wood or steel alloys, so this is the most popular option today.
- Plastic is not a typical material for making chairs. Products made from it are distinguished by originality and aesthetic originality. The material allows us to produce models of unusual shapes and designs.

For classic upholstered furniture, a frame made of wooden materials is usually used. An open metal base looks stylish in designer chairs in loft and modern style. Metal legs or supports, armrests go well with leather, faux leather or in contrast with soft velor, velvet, faux fur. The texture of wood allows it to be used in all open elements of the product and harmoniously combined with any type of textile or leather.
Popular fillers are polyurethane foam, dense foam rubber, synthetic winterizer, and felt. They hold their shape well, the chair retains its original appearance for a long time, and the surface does not deform.

As the main upholstery fabric for living room chairs, materials of various textures are used:
- Textiles - flock, jacquard, chenille, velor, tapestry, artificial suede, velvet, microfiber. Fabric upholstery is pleasant to contact with the body; their variety allows you to choose the best option in terms of quality, appearance, and cost. Some of them wear out quite quickly, losing their beautiful appearance. However, for example, for good quality chenille, chair manufacturers indicate a warranty period of half a century.
- Genuine leather looks prestigious, solid, durable, and easy to care for. Its disadvantages are high cost and “coolness”. During the winter months, a leather chair can be uncomfortable.
- Leatherette is a substitute imitating natural material. It doesn’t last that long on chairs, but in appearance, high-quality samples cannot be distinguished from natural ones. At the same time, it costs incomparably less.
As an option, you can choose faux fur - a material that imitates animal skin. Cozy on the chair in winter, but overheats in summer.
