- Video on the topic of wooden entrance doors for a private home
In the construction of a house, an important role is played by the choice of door, since it is not only the “face” of the future structure, but also a guarantor of the safety of the home and household members. A good door will provide high levels of heat and sound insulation. Wooden entrance doors for a private home will be a real decoration, since wood is very easy to process, and you can purchase a warm door with very beautiful carvings that will fit perfectly into a wooden house (considering that this is handmade, it depends on how sincerely the ornament is made by the master , the cost will depend).
Types of solid wood doors photo
Doors are made from various lumber: plywood, solid boards, chipboard. And high technology and proper processing made it possible to obtain the highest quality material at a low price. The following types of solid wood doors include:
- Solid wood panel. The most expensive type, requires constant care and timely processing. The cost will depend on the grade and type of wood used for manufacturing.
- Canvases made of MDF. They are made from waste lumber by processing and pressing on a special machine. It has advantages: optimal size (thickness 4–22 mm), hardness, moisture resistance, resistance to deformation. The downside is that during production, resin-containing adhesive compositions are used, which can release phenolphthalein.
- Plywood canvas. Thin sheets of wood are glued together using a press and synthetic resins. They have advantages: resistance to mechanical stress, strength, durability, low cost. The disadvantages include the same resin-based adhesive composition.
In many ways, the quality of a solid door depends on the type of wood that was used to make it.
Wood for making doors
Valuable and simple tree species are used to make solid wood doors. Among the most popular, I would like to highlight: oak, beech, maple, ash, alder, hazel, merbau, pine, spruce, larch. Let's look at some of the most popular door leaves in the photo with descriptions.
Oak canvas
Oak doors are superior in strength to all other types. The breed is durable and has a pleasant brownish-cream color.
The oak door has an interesting pattern.
The pattern is very different from all other breeds. The advantages include: high resistance to moisture, mechanical and chemical influences. The oak tree is not afraid of time; the door will serve not only the owners, but also their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The only big negative is the price. The price for solid oak starts at RUR 90,000.
Beech cloth
The color of beech is pinkish with light shades. Beech wood is hard and difficult to process. But it is afraid of moisture and rots quickly.
Beech wood is somewhat reminiscent of oak.
Not recommended for use in the bathroom, kitchen or as an entrance door. Not as durable as oak, but not inferior to it in strength and external qualities. During processing, specialists even out the color into red and burgundy shades. The price for solid beech wood is from RUR 45,000.
Ash canvas
Ash doors are distinguished by an unusual bright wood pattern. Color from whitish-yellow to honey. Durability and strength are comparable to oak. But it is soft, so working with the canvas is easy.
Ash doors are a good option for your home.
There is minimal cracking when drying, so defects occur less often. It tolerates temperature changes well, so it can be used at the entrance to a steam room or bathhouse. Ash doors are often considered a less expensive alternative to oak.
Walnut canvas
Walnut doors are considered economy class. But at a low price, the wood is hard, resistant to rotting and mechanical damage.
Walnut door with or without glass insert.
In terms of color, it can have more than 10 shades. The texture of the cloth is velvety with a beautiful, pronounced pattern. Easy to process even at home.
Alder canvas
Alder doors have a uniform light, almost white texture. In appearance, the panel seems to be covered with a silky fabric with a slight glossy sheen.
Solid alder has an almost white color.
The wood is soft and therefore easy to work with and dries quickly. But alder has one big disadvantage: without treatment, the door leaf will quickly darken and become dirty brown. The price of an alder door is low, but the canvas is afraid of moisture and rots quickly. When buying such a door for your apartment, you need to frequently process the door leaf.
Maple cloth
A maple door has a light yellow or reddish tint. When dried, it does not crack and shrinks slightly. Quite durable and not afraid of mechanical stress.
Solid maple can have different shades.
But when buying a maple door, you should understand that wood has a peculiarity: it changes color under different light levels. In terms of price category it is in the middle of the entire model range. A maple door is the choice of practical and economical people.
Merbau canvas
Modern doors are made not only from traditional wood, but also from exotic wood. One of these is a tree from the southeastern part of Asia, Merbau.
Doors made from merbrow resemble our pine, but they are better in quality.
Doors made from merbau are strong and durable. The main feature is that they are not at all afraid of moisture and do not crack when dried. The fact is that inside the wood there is a large amount of oils, which create a protective film on the surface of the canvas. They can be used in both dry and wet areas.
Aspen canvas
Manufacturers from Italy, Bulgaria and Russia also offer doors made from solid cherry, aspen, spruce and pine. But these are the most common and inexpensive types. The exception is aspen.
An aspen door will become a striking design element.
Aspen has a bright orange hue and looks rich in any design. An aspen door costs more than oak, but is not at all afraid of moisture. Working with aspen is difficult, since the wood is dense and difficult to process. Our doors are mainly made from imported raw materials, since our aspens are 70% susceptible to rotting from the inside.
Whatever type of wood the reader chooses, it is necessary to properly care for the canvas.
Types of doors
The time has already passed when a wooden door was made only of wood; now the market offers a variety of options for every taste and budget, and before purchasing it is worth familiarizing yourself with what kind of door it can be.
Solid wood door
Such doors are environmentally friendly, reliable, beautiful and, unfortunately, expensive. The price is determined by the fact that the canvas is made from a solid tree trunk. The most expensive modifications are made from oak, teak, walnut, ash and elm, while pine and larch are cheaper.
Demand creates supply, and manufacturers have learned to make solid wood doors more affordable. So on the market you can find canvases made from laminated wood. They are distinguished by an uneven surface color, but this only adds beauty and indicates the natural origin of the material.
Panel doors
This type of door is made of chipboard or MDF. MDF doors are especially popular; they are distinguished by their quality and attractiveness, and their cost is not so high. The inner part of the canvas consists of paper or plywood, and the outside is covered with veneer. To increase the strength of the product, metal sheets can also be sewn inside.
Paneled doors
Doors of this type resemble a construction set; the main elements - the frame and inserts (panels) - are assembled together. There are special grooves in the frame, and panels are inserted into them. Door design is limited only by the imagination of the designer. When choosing a paneled door for a wooden house as an entrance, you need to pay attention that the frame and panels are of the same type of wood, then all door elements will equally withstand humidity and temperature conditions.
Entrance door installation
Not getting confused in the huge selection of outdoor wooden doors is only half the success; you also need to install it correctly.
When installing a metal and wooden door in a wooden house, there are nuances inherent to each type, and it is better to know about them in advance.
Since the front door is quite heavy, you definitely need a partner to install it; it will be difficult to handle this task alone.
Entrance wooden doors for a country house are installed only after a year of completion of construction, during this period the structure shrinks strongly, after a year the shrinkage continues, but with less dynamics. The same rule applies to windows.
To prevent shrinkage from affecting the doorway, a casing (or door frame) is constructed between the wall and the door frame. If this is not done, then this threatens that one “fine” day the door will warp or jam, and this can also have a detrimental effect on the walls.
Features of manufacturing doors from solid wood
Solid wood doors are like an expensive business card for any home. They look rich and will fill the house with the living energy of nature.
Professionals coat the door leaf with varnish using a spray gun.
Doors are made from solid wood, but the top is not covered with veneer, but carefully processed on a grinding machine or manually. After sanding, each canvas is coated with varnish or expensive wax in 3-4 layers and sent to the buyer. The entire production process can be seen in more detail in the video:
Advantages of solid wood doors
But since wood is a living material and only real masters of their craft can work with it, not all companies produce high-quality door leaves. A good solid wood door has a number of advantages:
- resistance to high and low temperatures;
- high sound insulation;
- thermal insulation;
- strength;
- durability;
- unique natural wood pattern on each canvas.
But all quality characteristics can be lost if the door manufacturing process is incorrect. It is necessary to strictly observe each stage of production, only in this way the door will delight its owners for many years. To obtain a high-quality door, a number of conditions must be met:
- Raw materials (wood) must be chamber dried at a certain temperature.
- When gluing the array, a high-quality adhesive composition and correctly selected pressure were used.
- Quality and quantity of finishing coat layers.
Let's take a closer look at some of the conditions for making a high-quality solid wood door.
Preparation of wood for making doors
Before drying, only the highest quality wood is selected from the raw materials, without rotten knots or bugs. It is unacceptable to use wood with mold, uneven color or blue discoloration.
More than 100 thousand models are made from solid wood. Everyone will find something to suit their budget and taste.
The wood is dried in special chambers for a long period of time. The fact is that drying must be gradual so that the workpiece does not crack or lose its shape. Solid doors made from wood with natural moisture will quickly crack and lose their aesthetic appearance.
Moreover, stale wood gets into the chamber, and wood that has lain under a canopy for a certain amount of time from 6 to 12 months. Only with proper drying the raw materials will produce a high-quality door.
How to properly process a solid wood door
After production, the canvas is carefully sanded, first with coarse, then fine sandpaper. Only after this a primer and several layers of varnish are applied. You should not cover a solid wood door with paint, as all the natural beauty will be hidden.
Not only interior solid wood doors are varnished, but also entrance doors.
Varnish is necessary not only for refining, it plays a protective role from moisture and other external influences. For high-quality doors, polyurethane coatings are used. The fact is that polyurethane varnish has the ability to stretch. Small cracks that may appear on the canvas will not be noticeable.
In order for a solid wood door to look attractive, it must be processed in the following steps:
- The canvas is covered with stain in 1 layer. The stain is allowed to dry.
- At the end of the “staining”, a primer is applied. A primer with water-repellent properties is used.
- The canvas is sanded again with fine sandpaper.
- Apply the first layer of varnish and allow to dry.
- Sanding again.
- Second coat of varnish, etc. 4 layers.
You can process a solid wood door with your own hands or buy a ready-made one like in the photo. We’ll talk about what types of solid wood doors can be found in our stores below.
Why was the door warped?
Some points to consider:
- Wood for casing must have a moisture content of at least 12%.
- The width of the casing is equal to the thickness of the walls (but not more than 25 cm).
- Gaps should not be sealed with polyurethane foam, as it has adhesive properties. And the door casing should not be rigidly fixed in the opening, otherwise it will not be able to fulfill its purpose.
- The wood of the sapling needs to be treated with an antiseptic.
Often, the option of installing a frame is chosen, when a recess is cut in the side parts of the opening, into which a block of the appropriate size is mounted closely, then a rough box is filled on top of it, and the top (the upper part of the box) is fixed separately.
Assembly and installation of casing
The opening is cut out with a chainsaw. Where the opening will be needs to be thought out in advance at the design stage, so that later you don’t have to think about how to move the door in a wooden house, since this is very problematic, labor-intensive and will not go unnoticed during construction.
Next, you need to prepare the lower part (with a saw and an ax, you can use a plane), each time you need to check everything with a level so that it is level. The sampling of the door frame is made lower, and then the lower part of the frame will be placed there.
Next, a tenon is cut out in the wall (many builders also prefer to make the tenon directly in the box, this option is acceptable and we will consider it below).
If the walls in a log house have begun to loosen, then before working on the door you need to install spacers. The walls for installing the door must be strictly vertical.
The tenon in the log is made in such a way that the box of the joint fits tightly, and again a control measurement is made with a building level.
At this stage, the opening is treated with an antiseptic, which will protect the structure from rotting, insects, etc.
Then the jute seal is nailed (you can use a regular stapler). If the jute is dense, then it must be attached without going into the tenon. The sealant can be tow, mineral wool, etc.
A metal door is installed either on external hinges (an unreliable option) or on hidden hinges (this option is preferable, since it is the most resistant to burglary).
After installing a metal door, you need to check the quality of work; you can use a level, but the main criterion for correct installation is that the door, when open, does not try to slam shut in any position.
Let's consider the option of a socket, where not a tenon, but a groove is made in the wall:
Again, the first step is to cut out the opening, the width and height of the opening corresponds to the future door. Then special recesses are cut out on the sides of these openings; they must correspond to the size of the block that will be placed in these recesses, usually 5x5 cm.
Advantages and features of wooden products
Wood is a reliable and strong material that can withstand various impacts. Oak is considered the most durable species; you can order products from this type of wood from us. We also offer double-glazed entrance doors made from pine and larch - these are more affordable options in terms of cost, but also have a number of advantages:
- Any wood has good thermal insulation ability. Due to its dense structure, the material does not allow cold air from the street to pass through and does not allow heat to evaporate. For this reason, wood is well suited for making entrance and balcony doors.
- The material also has soundproofing properties, so irritating sounds that interfere with your rest will not be heard from the street or entrance. This is facilitated not only by wood, but also by the installation of high-quality double-glazed windows.
- Wood is strong enough to withstand various influences, both atmospheric and mechanical, so wooden doors with double-glazed windows can serve their owners for a long time.
At the customer's request, single-chamber or double-glazed windows can be installed, and you can also choose the type of wood and a suitable color from the RAL palette so that the product matches your interior.

Installation of box and canvas
Next, a block is driven into the cut opening; it should be shorter than the opening. The purpose of this design is to prevent the house from resting on the block during shrinkage, otherwise the walls of the building will crack. The block should fit tightly into the recess, but hand force is sufficient to drive it in (without the use of additional tools). The block should stand freely; there is no need to secure it with additional fasteners. The house will move along it.
Next, the jute is secured with a stapler. Jute should not be placed on the block.
After this, the casing board, cut to the required size, is mounted on self-tapping screws. The pitch between the screws should be 30-40 cm.
The top part of the box is inserted, leaving a gap of 5 cm. A gap is needed even if the house has been standing for more than a year (a house made of laminated timber, although it gives minimal shrinkage, but here it’s 50/50 - maybe it will shrink, maybe not, so you still need to leave a gap ). Insulation is placed in this gap; it can be anything, the main requirement for it is that it must be soft. At this point, the casing is ready, and you can begin installing the door.
The door is hung on the installed hinges, and the frame is closed with platbands.
Please note that the top is necessary for a future wooden door, but if you plan to install an iron one, then you don’t have to do it - here the top support will be the corresponding crossbar of the metal frame itself.
If the house is built not from rounded logs, but from hewn ones, then the following problem arises - all the logs are of different diameters, and if you install a platband, then in some places there will be “indecent” gaps. The solution to the problem is to make the casing a little smaller (on the smallest log), and then make cuts (cut out protruding parts under the casing). Thus, the box will be, as it were, recessed into the walls. The platband is then made (or ordered) as thick as the largest edge.
Common mistakes
When installing doors, you need to pay attention to the following points to avoid mistakes:
- Immediately decide on the side of the door opening, as well as where the top and bottom of the canvas are based on the drawing.
- Since the screws from the factory set are often quite soft, it is worth pre-drilling holes of a smaller diameter.
- A drill is not the best tool for tightening screws.
- Since MDF doors are susceptible to moisture, they need to be treated with a sealant. An alternative to sealant can be PVA glue.
- For marking, you need to use a sharpened pencil or a stationery knife.
- When inserting hinges, you need to take into account the difference in the thickness of the leaf and the door frame with the seal.
We have already told you what shortcomings can lead to improper installation of the door, but if the situation has already happened and the door in a wooden house is still warped, what should you do? If the door is wooden, then you need to remove it from its hinges and trim it with a plane in those places where it is larger. If the door is metal, then the first thing you need to do is check the hinges; perhaps they are loose and just need to be tightened; if this option does not work, then you can try replacing the hinges. If this does not help, then there is only one way out - change the door to a wooden one, since it will be easier to fit it to the “moved” opening. This method of correcting the situation is suitable for both entrance and interior doors.
Installing a door in a house is a very significant stage of construction, and here it is important to approach the selection and installation with full responsibility. This is the only way to install a door that will please you for many years.
Are there any disadvantages to solid wood doors?
Some door leaves can be classified as disadvantages, but in fact they are not obvious disadvantages at all. For example, it is sensitive to humidity. But timely treatment with substances that increase moisture resistance will completely protect against such problems. This door leaf is also relatively heavy and therefore a real noise protector. The need for periodic maintenance cannot be considered a disadvantage, since tightening the hinges is not such a difficult problem. There is an opinion that interior doors made of solid wood are too expensive. This is actually a misconception. The cost depends on the type of wood, but elite and inexpensive varieties last the same amount of time, so you can choose a more affordable option and get all the advantages!
