There's a boring closet at home. And it's been standing for a long time. It’s sad for you that it’s not as beautiful as it used to be, and for the closet for the same reason. So you need to make your own cabinet decor! You just need to decide on an idea, and the process will drag out instantly.
Choose an option
Of course, it is important that the future wardrobe is decorated in the general style of the room. It may well become a bright accent, but still should not stand out from the overall impression of the room. If the whole room is decorated in retro style, then you should not decorate the old cabinet in high-tech colors.
The most harmonious thing would be to focus on matching the tones of the room or those that are combined with it, and repeat the pattern or element somewhere on the surface of the cabinet. You can do the opposite: add some elements from a decorated piece of furniture around the room. In any case, the closet and the entire room must somehow intersect and combine.

Models are also available as built-in or free-standing. A stand-alone wardrobe is a non-built-in wardrobe with sliding doors. Its advantage over the built-in one is the ability to move it from place to place. But built-in wardrobes allow you to save materials during production, since they do not need side and top panels, since their function is performed by the walls and ceiling. Such models are built into niches, located from wall to wall, and hide the flaws of the room. Read more about custom-made wardrobes.

- Wardrobe decor with wallpaper. A very affordable way to radically transform any piece of furniture. Moreover, then the room and furniture will really be in the same style.
- Use self-adhesive films. Furniture has been decorated with such films for a long time, so unusual and beautiful options are appearing more and more often. You can choose something to match the interior of the entire room.
- Decoupage. This option has captivated many, because it really does amazing things with furniture! With decoupage, any cabinet will become a separate piece of design.
- Volumetric plaster. Molding elements can amazingly transform even the most boring cabinet. And if you highlight them with gilding or any other paint, the furniture will instantly be ennobled and shine in a new color.
Nobody forbids combining different types of decoration with each other. Plaster and decoupage are often used together; wallpaper and painting elements look quite harmonious. Only self-adhesive film is usually used as an independent decor.
Features of manufacturing the decor of a wardrobe for a library
Due to the fact that the decor of a wardrobe for a library requires a non-standard approach, the quality of the image is of particular importance. The library owner may want to use photographs from a personal album. This can be any photo of at least 1600x1200 pixels in high resolution, without flaws.
Today there are three types of photo printing. You can learn briefly about each of them from this table:
Photo printing type | Peculiarities |
UV printing | This is direct printing with a UV printer directly on the surface of the material using special inks. As a result of UV irradiation, the paints are sintered with the base. If the canvas area is large, then you should divide it into parts or use film printing. |
Film | The design is applied to a transparent polymer film. Then the film with the image is glued to the surface of the base material. Can be used on doors of any shape. |
Triplex printing | Triplex is used as a base; the drawing is placed between the glasses. For better adhesion, the glass is heated to the melting temperature of the film. |
Photo printing is used to decorate glass and mirror cabinet doors, as well as those made of MDF, acrylic, and chipboard. Read more about printing technology.

With a brush in hand
Decorating a cabinet with paints is one of the easiest things to do. Even just a cabinet painted in one color already looks completely different. It is best to use water-based paint or acrylic. Water-based paint is more advantageous for use on large surfaces, for example, for the facade of a cabinet, but acrylic is more convenient for doing “jewelry” work.
A brush and a little inspiration can do incredible things with furniture.
The cabinet doors can be highlighted with a different color outline - and the entire facade will instantly seem three-dimensional. Stripes of different thicknesses or cheerful polka dots look amazing. To do this, you don't need any artistic skills at all. It is enough just to mark the cabinet well so that the pattern is uniform throughout the furniture.
If you have artistic skills, then your closet is incredibly lucky! Imagine your furniture as a canvas and start creating! Floral and plant motifs, fairy-tale and fantasy paintings, entire landscapes or paintings will look interesting. It is best to first make a sketch on paper to see exactly how the cabinet should look, and then transfer all the ideas to the furniture. For detailed drawing you will definitely need acrylic.
Water-based and acrylic paints are practically odorless. So you can paint furniture at home. However, place film or paper under the cabinet so as not to stain the floor. There is no need to coat the finished decor with any varnishes. Both paints are very durable.
What to do if there are a lot of ideas for painting a closet, but the inner artist has escaped somewhere? Then we will decorate any cabinets using a stencil. Such a useful thing can be found in all sorts of art stores or you can make it yourself. To create a stencil yourself, you will need the selected design, a thick but transparent plastic folder, something to write on, and scissors.
Print out the drawing in the required size. If it is very large, then divide it into several sheets. Then place the paper under the folder, draw this pattern on the plastic and cut it out. That's it, you have a stencil. Now you can decorate cabinet doors with the most intricate patterns.
Methods requiring the use of paints
Decoupage
Wardrobe door assembly diagram.
This method is suitable for decorating any surface: solid wood, chipboard, MDF, plastic, glass and mirrors.
If your wardrobe is made of wood, chipboard or MDF, then decoupage on its doors will be done as follows:
- Sand the areas where the pattern will be applied with fine-grit sandpaper to remove excess varnish or paint from the surface and make it smooth.
- Cover these places with acrylic varnish and prime (a special acrylic primer is used for this). Then sand again, apply varnish and primer.
- Attach the pattern.
- Cover it with varnish.
- Next, if necessary, refine the drawing with acrylic paints - this will give the image life, as if it were a handwritten painting.
- Cover the work with varnish in several layers (from 7).
- Sand and additionally decorate using the craquelure technique, for example.
- Apply a finishing coat of varnish: it is better if it is alkyd or yacht varnish - this way you won’t have to worry that your creation will not last long. But you can get by with acrylic, because the wardrobe is rarely located in a room with high humidity.

Important! Each new layer (be it a layer of varnish, additional painting with acrylic paints or primer) is applied to the completely dried previous one.
It should be remembered that each new layer of decor is applied to the completely dried previous one.
Often a large mirror is built into a wardrobe. If you want to decorate it too, then the decoupage technique is also available for this surface:
- Pre-clean the mirror from all dirt using alcohol solutions or a special glass cleaning liquid.
- Cover the areas where you are going to apply patterns with acrylic varnish.
- Cover the dried layer of varnish with primer. And the primer is again varnished.
- Sand it down.
- Attach the pattern and varnish again.
- Use acrylic paints to complete the artistic finishing touches - add strokes to the ornament or add new elements altogether. In addition to acrylic paints, you can add patterns and other elements using special stained glass paints.
- Coat your creation with varnish again and sand it. Again, you can use the craquelure effect, etc. After this, apply a finishing coat of varnish.
By the way, using stained glass paints you can make a full-fledged mirror design without resorting to decoupage.
We take out the remaining wallpaper
Another fairly simple option for decorating a closet. Moreover, this way the furniture can be made either as inconspicuous as possible, or an accent can be created on it. And everyone has leftover wallpaper, so you won’t even need to buy anything.
Combinations of different wallpapers look great. There are almost limitless ideas for decorating cabinets with this material. The walls can be covered with one kind of wallpaper, and the doors with another. Can be combined with paint to create a solid base color.
The decor of the wardrobe gives even more possibilities. You can stick bright photo wallpapers with a gorgeous landscape, a view of the city, or even a piece of space on the facade. Nothing compares to these cabinet panels.
Painting and painting
When painting, you should not forget about the style of the interior.
If you decide to paint your wardrobe with your own hands, then you have labor-intensive work ahead of you:
- Before you start painting furniture made of chipboard, wood or MDF, you need to prepare the surface. Sand it and coat it with a layer of alkyd primer.
- Once the alkyd primer is dry, apply an acrylic primer over it.
- Then start painting with a roller or brush. It is better to use alkyd or oil paints. It is better to apply at least 2 layers.
If the surface of the wardrobe is not damaged, then it is better to leave it intact. If you really want something new, then make a drawing using a stencil, or if you have a talent for drawing, make a drawing yourself using acrylic paints. This decor will be original.
- Sand the areas where the image will be applied using sandpaper and prime with acrylic primer.
- Now you can create! Draw whatever your heart desires, not forgetting, of course, about the style of the interior, so that the decor of the wardrobe does not spoil the overall picture. It’s better to draw small elements: patterns, flowers, etc. This reduces the likelihood of “not fitting” into the overall harmony.
- When the paint is dry, cover it with several layers of acrylic varnish (about 6-10).
- Finally, sand the surface.

Transformation with film
The advantage of the film is that it is easy to apply and is easy to clean. This is one of the few materials that holds up on old Soviet lacquered cabinets. Their varnish coating is very difficult to remove, which greatly limits decoration options.
It is not necessary to cover the entire closet with some kind of monochromatic film. You can always find options with unusual patterns or ready-made cut out patterns. Again, there is always the option of cutting out a pattern or silhouette yourself. This self-adhesive film can also quickly transform any mirror or glass, and if you are tired of the result, then it is quite possible to peel it off.
Magic decoupage
The most incredible DIY transformation of an old cabinet is decoupage. You can do anything with this method. The cabinet can be rejuvenated or artificially aged, by adding gilding, vintage drawings and even photographs.
But this process is very complex and lengthy. Yes, and availability is no different. Finding suitable decoupage napkins is easy and cheap, but all base and finishing materials cannot be called cheap. If you definitely decide that decoupage is exactly what you need, practice first on smaller objects and areas, and then move on to furniture.
Unusual uses of plaster
Plaster allows you to add texture to any surface. These can only be some corner elements, such as a contour ornament, or the entire surface will have a relief pattern. For such work you will need all sorts of stamps and stencils.
The finished texture can also be saturated with color. Here again you will need paint. Painting or covering in one tone is a matter of imagination. Texture and decoupage are amazingly combined. Then the surface will really seem voluminous and somehow impossible.
Always give your furniture new life. Believe me, you will never be able to find more unusual and original furniture than made by yourself. Get inspired and start creating!
