Decorative corner fireplaces: features of choice

05/08/2017 2811 Stove maker (Moscow) In order to decorate the surface of the fireplace portal, it is necessary to choose the right finishing material. This rule applies not only to island and wall structures, but also to corner structures.

Corner fireplace mantels are selected based on the type of hearth, size and style of the fireplace heating unit.

In order to get acquainted with ready-made and implemented projects, we recommend viewing the photos in this article.

DIY corner fireplace made of plasterboard

There are several types of homemade corner decorative fireplaces, each of which has its own advantages:

  • symbolic. It is made in the form of a picture imitating a fireplace portal. This is the simplest option, which has few similar details to the real one;
  • conditional. In this solution, in addition to the decorative image of the fire and firebox, a portal is installed, which can be made from old furniture, a cardboard box, or drywall. Instead of a decorative image, you can install an electric fireplace, provided that all fire safety rules are followed;
  • floor biofireplaces. This is a modern high-tech solution where a device with an LCD TV capable of simulating the burning of a real flame is mounted in a portal that is installed against a wall in an apartment or country house.

For realism, firewood and stones can be laid out in the firebox, and an iron damper can be placed outside, just like in real fireplaces.

The cost of organizing a fireplace at home will directly depend on the choice of design type.

Creating a fireplace, like any other engineering structure, should begin with choosing a location. After this, measurements are taken on all planes, after which a drawing of a corner fireplace made of plasterboard with dimensions is drawn.

Important! To make the fireplace as similar as possible to the real one, you should maintain the proportions in the ratio 2:3 (width x height). The depth of the firebox relative to the height should be set in a ratio of 1:2.

Another condition that will help create a beautiful and realistic fireplace is the thickness of the plasterboard (optimal if the sheet thickness is from 9 to 12.5 mm), for which you need to select the appropriate metal profile and self-tapping screws to connect the elements into a single structure.

Corner fireplace in the interior

To complete the style of finishing the room, you need to select the appropriate fireplace. If you purchase ready-made designs, they are already classified by the manufacturer according to the most commonly used styles. But if you make a hearth yourself, you should adhere to the general rules:

  • a classic interior involves installing a corner fireplace of the correct shape, the portal should be U-shaped, stucco molding, columns, and sculptural elements are welcome. In finishing you can use brick, natural or artificial stone, wood;
  • a fireplace in the Empire style is distinguished by the presence of a large number of decorative elements, you can use elements of ancient mythology, its shape is similar to the classic one, only a more diverse range of colors is used;

  • country style will be well complemented by a fireplace with a wooden portal, or made of shell stone or sandstone, complemented by decorative elements in the form of fabric with a national ornament;
  • the modern interior is favorably emphasized by laconic corner fireplaces with a closed glass firebox; any materials can be used in decoration, but preference is given to steel, chrome, glass, and plain marble. It is better not to use decorative tiles, wood and brick.

The fireplace should match the interior; in any case, it will stand out and attract attention, so you should not make it pretentious and bright.

Decorative fireplace decoration

At the first stage, you need to prepare all the parts by cutting the drywall into slabs of the required sizes and metal profiles, according to the drawings.

Before assembling the metal frame, organize the power supply if you plan to build in an electric fireplace or install decorative lighting. After this, mark the walls where the metal profile will be screwed in and the supporting racks will be installed.

Important! If the drawing provides for rounded shapes, you will have to bend the metal yourself, biting the sides of the profile every 5-7 cm, which may be associated with additional difficulties.

How to make a corner fireplace from plasterboard

When all the frame elements are screwed to the wall, check the structure for stability, and then proceed to cladding. If you are planning a stationary fireplace that should last for many years, avoid using cardboard (a rather fragile material), using only plasterboard sheets. Cover the frame of the future false fireplace using self-tapping screws, which should be tightly screwed in, which will prevent possible loosening of the structure. Self-tapping screws are screwed in at intervals of 20-25 cm. The inside of the fireplace can be finished with heat-resistant material (magnesite, asbestos), especially if you plan to install an electric fireplace.

Next, you need to putty the fireplace with a starting and finishing mixture in the places where screws are used and at the joints. To ensure that cracks appear on the fireplace and it lasts as long as possible, after plastering, sand and prime the surface. At this stage, you can artificially age the fireplace, giving the surface a rough structure, which will add charm.

DIY corner fireplace: master class

Today I will tell you how to make a fireplace with your own hands.

Most of us live in an apartment and therefore it is not possible to make a real fireplace. And how I want it! especially in winter, wrap yourself in a warm blanket and read a book under the crackling fire. Well, let's not get upset and make a decorative fireplace for the apartment. Moreover, it is often decorated for the New Year. Gifts are stacked near it and Christmas socks are hung.

I apologize in advance for the quality of the photos. They were made using a telephone.

So, our fireplace will be in the corner. Therefore, we make a triangular frame from wood. I had an electric fireplace for heating, so I decided to use it as the basis for our fireplace.

The electric fireplace must fit in the middle of our structure, so we make a shelf for it.

At the bottom of the fireplace I made a window where I plan to put firewood for greater realism. :)

Next we need a sheet of drywall. We cut out two windows in it: for the electric fireplace and for the firewood):

Now we will glue the gypsum tiles. But in order to glue it, you must first make it :)

Yes Yes! Sami! With your own hands!

For this I used a baking dish and a piece of drywall. I cut the drywall so that it could divide my shape exactly in half. Then I took a transparent bag (thick, which rustles loudly) and crushed it well, the more folds it gets, the better! Wrinkled it, unfolded it and put it on the bottom of our form. You need two bags. Then we will pour plaster on them.

We dilute the gypsum with water to a liquid state and immediately pour it into the mold, otherwise it will harden. We pour out enough so that the thickness of our tile is approximately one centimeter.

The plaster hardens in about 15-20 minutes. Next, carefully remove our blanks from the mold. You can pull them out by the ends of the film. We separate the film and lay the tiles to dry for about a day.

Plaster is very fragile and must be handled very carefully.

When we pulled out the tile and turned it over, we see that it had an interesting pattern. A wrinkled bag did it :)

When the tile is dry we will glue it. Like this:

Next we will paint the tiles, although the white one was also beautiful, but it’s up to whoever likes it :)

I used beech colored varnish. I applied it to the tiles with a brush. The first layer turned out light. Then I applied another coat of varnish.

The photo above shows the difference.

The next step is to seal the gaps between the tiles.

For this I used Volma gypsum plaster. I diluted it with water and covered the cracks with a spatula.

Next I made a frame for the fireplace and windows from door frames. I sawed and glued it with glue (to be honest, this glue does not hold well. Can anyone give advice on which glue is better to use?).

This is how it turned out in the end. Now it's warm and beautiful here!

We have decorated our fireplace and are ready for the New Year :)

Thank you very much for your attention!

How to decorate a false fireplace

When choosing a finishing material, the main thing is to take into account the interior of the room; the fireplace should fit organically into the overall space, complementing it. If desired, the fireplace, in addition to painting, covering with film, applying decorative plaster, can be decorated with an additional shelf, figured elements, statues, columns and other decorative details.

Important! The only condition is not to overload the fireplace with details, otherwise it may ruin the composition. You can also install candles, add forged elements, and put decorative firewood and stones in the firebox.

DIY false fireplace from old furniture

The most inexpensive solution is to build a fireplace from scrap materials. Many people have furniture on their balcony, garage or dacha that is already obsolete, but at the same time it’s a pity to throw it away. It can become an excellent frame for an artificial fireplace. Both laminated and matte chipboard are suitable for the design.

Reference! Unlike a plasterboard solution, decorating from old furniture has one advantage: the system does not need to be attached to one of the walls, but the fireplace can be made mobile. If the fireplace is needed, it can be hidden, folded or moved to another place.

Finishing the portal of a decorative corner fireplace

The same materials that are used to make the frame of a decorative hearth can also be used for its external decoration. This point is quite important, since the fireplace should be part of the interior and look harmonious in the chosen style.

Most often, plasterboard is used to make portals. This material is characterized by high strength, lightness and ease of installation. Various materials can be used for external finishing of plasterboard construction:

Covering a corner fireplace

  • paint;
  • decorative putty;
  • tiles;
  • marble;
  • fake diamond;
  • self-adhesive film.

The choice of material is determined by the appearance that the fireplace should have, as well as material costs. If you plan to do the work yourself in order to save money, then the most budget-friendly option would be to cover the portal with a film that imitates wood or natural stone. Despite its cheapness, this material can be similar to the original, especially if you give the frame texture and relief in advance using putty or polystyrene foam.

Ceramic tiles or real marble will give the fireplace a more status-like look, however, keep in mind:

  • firstly, the weight of the finishing material - in accordance with it you need to select materials for the frame. If marble is used, the plasterboard structure may not support its weight, in which case it is better to use brickwork.
  • secondly, the massiveness of the fireplace with marble trim. Despite its size, such a hearth will look bulky in a small room, and besides, marble does not fit well with some interior details; It is better to use tiles and marble for a fireplace that will run on gas or biofuel; installing an electric screen instead of a firebox or leaving a fake niche with candles would be inappropriate.

Cladding the corner fireplace portal with tiles and artificial stone

The best option for finishing a decorative corner fireplace, which is located in a small apartment, would be putty, painting or artificial stone.

Using these materials, you can make the most realistic fireplace, which will resemble a traditional wood-burning one, but at the same time it is easy to build it yourself, and, if desired, modify it - repaint it, change the texture, thereby refreshing it or adapting it to a new interior.
