Features of antique style in the interior

Magnificent ancient Greek and Roman monuments still make us admire their beauty and inimitability. The triumphal arches, the Colosseum, statues of gods and goddesses, and unique paintings are so harmonious and amazing that even today they are a standard to follow.

The antique style can be characterized using three epithets:

  • monumental;
  • majestic;
  • front door

This interior is distinguished by museum nobility. This is an eternal classic, the fashion for which will never go away.

In order for a house or apartment to acquire antique features, it is not enough to simply build some kind of portico with two marble columns. There should be nobility and completeness in the room.

Build a semblance of an ancient Greek temple or the palace of an ancient Roman patrician in an apartment of 40 square meters. m, of course, it won’t work. You can create an “eternal” interior only in a spacious room with high ceilings. Otherwise, you will end up with a vague parody of antiquity or a cluttered, uncomfortable room that puts pressure on the psyche of its owner.

Don’t get carried away with excessive decoration of the room; this style is very self-sufficient and does not require any additional decorations.

The features of this style include the following:

  • arched order cell (triumphal arch);
  • a dome-shaped ceiling, painted, complemented by relief images;
  • wall painting (frescoes);
  • floor covering (initially ancient masters laid out floors with mosaics, later they began to cover them with carpets);
  • additional accessories include floor-painted vases and small terracotta figurines;
  • color palette - bright colors (blue, green, red, gold, yellow, black, ivory).

Antique style according to the rules. Laws from designers:

Law 1.

The rigor of architectural orders and decorative elements. The main feature of the cultural style of Ancient Greece is rational constructiveness, of Ancient Rome - a large number of decorations;

Law 2.

The “golden mean” is an important sign of perfection, “neither subtract nor add”;

Law 3.

Proportionality, i.e. the correct relationship of the parts of the interior composition with each other and with the entire composition as a whole. “Sensation is relation; the starting point of relationships is proportionality to man: man is the measure of everything” (Aristotle);

Law 4.

The rule of the “Golden Section” (golden proportion, division in extreme and average ratios) as a means of creating harmony and proportions implies the search for ideal solutions;

Law 5.

A sense of harmony that is created through contrast: “Contradiction brings together, diversity gives rise to the most beautiful harmony, and everything is created through discord,” said the philosopher Heraclitus. The Colosseum, triumphal arches, columns, barrel vaults, beautiful sculptures of noble people, gods, goddesses, amazing artistic paintings (see the example below) attract with their harmony and are a standard to follow.

In modern antique style it is often

There are picturesque paintings, beautiful tapestries with mythological subjects. As decoration in the interior there are a number of columns, standing separately, as well as in the form of wall bas-reliefs.

Walls

You can create any room in this style. Fresco painting is used to decorate the walls in the living room, bedroom, and kitchen. The subject of such images is usually based on ancient Greek and Roman myths, but can be on natural, historical or military themes. One of the walls is decorated with a fresco, others are painted with matte paint or decorative plaster is applied.

The current design of photo wallpapers is too different from those produced during the Soviet Union. They are much higher quality, have high computer resolution, and can be of various sizes. Today's technological capabilities make it possible to produce photo wallpaper for walls depicting a plot chosen directly by the client. If you want, you can order photo wallpaper with your favorite photograph, for example, from your last vacation spot. Thus, snowy peaks or a sandy beach will be right in your room. Ceiling

Many ancient Greek and Roman architectural objects were characterized by a coffered ceiling (made of intersecting graceful beams, niches are formed between them, which are decorated with rosettes and other decors, and painted). You can also decorate the ceiling in a modern apartment, for example, in a living room or hall. The surface of the ceiling can simply be painted and decorated with plaster or polyurethane rosettes.

Tip: matte tensile structures with or without print are ideal for an antique style with a modern twist.

The antique style is characterized by the use of a large amount of stucco. These could be, for example, panels made of moldings with lampshades located in them. Decorative stucco elements and columns are painted in single colors (white, beige, light gray, ivory), additional decoration with gold leaf with an aging effect is allowed.

Premises suitable for embodying antiquity in the interior

You can fully furnish your home in an antique style if it is spacious enough, with high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows, since this style requires a large space for its implementation. For example, it could be a country house or a villa, preferably with a garden, so that even in the garden you can harmoniously arrange several imitations of antique sculptures.

Arches and columns, which can be simply decorative, can be placed in large halls or a spacious hall. An antique style bathtub will look very interesting and beautiful (accordingly, the bathroom room should be large enough). The famous Roman baths were a separate cult and ritual, why not try to recreate them in a modern bathroom?

Antique-style tiles in a natural color for cladding are suitable for this.

The ceiling can be multi-level - create the illusion of a high dome, characteristic of Roman architecture.

A smooth ceiling will be an easier option to implement; it can be decorated with a relief border with images of mythological scenes, or decorate it around the perimeter with a stencil ornament.

Choose the appropriate sanitary ware - a classic bathtub with legs with relief patterns. Or place the bathtub on an appropriate pedestal with a mosaic covering. The rest of the plumbing should be in harmony with the bathroom.

Floor

The ideal option for the floor in an antique interior is warm-colored tiles with decorative inserts.

For residential premises, you can use stacked parquet.

Advice: use a laminate that is cheaper than parquet, but it is advisable to cover it with carpet.

When creating an antique style, use only natural materials!

You shouldn’t skimp on styling an antique interior – you can create a unique design. The antique design of individual zones and spaces is characterized by a special symmetry, where objects and silhouettes must be repeated in a certain sequence. This may be alternation or a strictly thought-out order. When decorating, it is advisable to use a niche, create columns, filling the free space with decor based on mirrors, sculptures, figured and painted vases.

When painting walls, it is important to maintain light natural tones that can harmoniously combine with light frames on paintings, mirrors, panels and stained glass windows. It is ideal to use tapestry and beautifully styled upholstery for upholstered furniture. Decor made from natural materials using beautiful prints will add a special chic to your decor. It is appropriate to place the bed on a podium, use a massive canopy and other furnishings inherent in Greek culture. For the interior, buy low wooden furniture and high-pile carpeting. You can lay out the animal skin and hang masks. To decorate the kitchen and dining room, it is better to use earthenware and utensils that bring a feeling of peace and tranquility to everyday life. Panels with drapery, simple pictures in two or three colors are appropriate, reminiscent of images on ancient frescoes, pottery found in caves, on rocks.

Antique style furniture

The following forms of furniture were characteristic of the “eternal” interior:

  • benches;
  • ordinary and ceremonial chairs (klismos);
  • simple work tables and low trapezoidal tables with three legs in the shape of animal paws or griffin figures;
  • as additional accessories - small chests, baskets, cabinets.

Antique-style furniture should look expensive, even if it is an imitation of high prices. It should be made of natural wood, decorated with carvings, inlaid with gold and ivory.

A modern interior can be furnished with antique furniture that has clear signs of time.

Advice: if you want to save money, then use inexpensive modern furniture, but only artificially aged using various techniques.

Finishes and materials

A modern solution to creating an antique style is matte paint and decorative plaster on the walls. The simple background is diluted with painting subjects. Painting, gilding, and other decor serve as decoration for niches, arches, columns, and stucco moldings. The ceiling is made polygonal, with square recesses, which adds spaciousness to the room. The ceiling structure can be made using beams arranged in graceful intersections. Marble is present in the antique style and is often used for flooring. Porcelain tiles, mosaics, and parquet made from good types of wood can also be used.

You can get high-quality design in this style using decorative materials from the famous manufacturer San Marco:

  • Rilievo is a plaster with acrylic polymer and fiber filler for creating antique surfaces. Imitates natural stone, brick wall. It can be pearlescent or matte. It is distinguished by its practicality, variety of textures, and budget price.
  • Antica Calce is a matte paint for recreating an antique style. It has an external analogy with lime plaster, but it is not afraid of moisture, is easy to apply, and is not subject to destruction.
  • Cadoro is a decorative coating that is used to create sophisticated patterns similar to moire silk. Different application techniques allow you to achieve different reflections and refractions of light on surfaces.
  • Velatura is a glaze coating designed to create an aged, soft velor surface. Has protective properties.
  • Unimarc Hobby is an enamel created for decoration that will do an excellent job of imitating precious metals.
  • Via Della Seta is a matte decorative paint that creates the effect of a velvety fabric on the wall.

The color scheme suggests muted shades of ocher, cobalt, olive, beige, brown, and terracotta. The design can be contrasting or monochromatic. It is complemented by reflections of warm metals: bronze, gilding. At the same time, everything should be elegant and concise.
