Relatively recently, such finishing of wall surfaces as decorative plaster has come into fashion.
Among the huge variety of different plasters, the silk finishing option stands out.
Silk plaster differs from all other finishes, first of all, in its attractive soft shimmer of surfaces.
In addition, using silk plaster you can hide minor wall defects.
Characteristics
Most modern finishing materials have a heterogeneous composition, and silk plaster is no exception; it contains various polymers, including acrylic copolymers, cotton and cellulose fibers, silk, mica, marble chips, sand and all kinds of dyes.
Variety of silk plasters
Two decades after its first appearance on the market, silk plaster has fallen significantly in price and has acquired a sufficient depth of range. Globally, all liquid wallpapers are divided into those that contain natural silk fibers, and those where the manufacturer has replaced the natural product with synthetics. In any case, it looks beautiful and attractive.
At the same time, there are also differences in texture and appearance. It has already been written above that you can add, for example, sparkles - this gives the finished surface a special shine and deep shimmer. The difference in texture is usually emphasized by the size of individual fabric particles - it is believed that the larger they are, the more aesthetically attractive the completed repair will be.
A variety of silk plaster can satisfy any consumer
pros
The main advantage of silk plaster is its attractive appearance when decorating ceiling and wall surfaces.
In addition, thanks to special additives, this type of finish has dirt-repellent and dust-repellent properties and is not susceptible to the formation of mold and mildew.
At the same time, finishing work with such material is not particularly difficult, and the plaster can be easily restored in case of damage.
Main pros and cons
Such plaster is valued for the absence of the need to level the walls, but it would be a mistake to think that the entire popularity of this finish rests solely on this fact alone. In fact, liquid wallpaper has a number of other advantages that make the customer prefer them. Here are some of them:
- Special additives included in the vast majority of varieties of decorative plaster guarantee the absence of mold problems.
- The positive qualities of such wallpaper often also include antistatic properties - they do not collect electrical charges.
- The finished surface can be repaired extremely easily after damage - just generously moisten the damaged area with water and put it in order with your hands, working with it like plasticine. If things are really bad, the damaged fragment is simply removed entirely, and a new portion of the mixture is added in its place.
- Silk plaster does not have the highest heat and sound insulation rates, but they are still higher than those of classic wallpaper. At the same time, for large rooms this wall decoration is good because it dampens the echo very well.
- Are you wondering how to combine materials for finishing walls and ceilings? Choose this type of plaster for both, and the combination will turn out extremely organic (see photo below)!
- Finally, just as there is nothing complicated about the repair, the application itself is not a labor-intensive or too abstruse task. There is nothing special to learn here, all you need is diligence and accuracy.
Silk plaster is perfect for both walls and ceilings.
Unfortunately, silk plaster also has some disadvantages in its resume, namely:
- It is strictly not recommended to use liquid wallpaper in any walk-through rooms where the walls are likely to be wiped - the coating deteriorates very easily even with minor mechanical impact.
- Due to the significant amount of fabric fibers, the surface will easily absorb any odors, so this solution is also not suitable for the kitchen. You understand, if the walls smell of one delicious dish, and on the table of another, then this is only half the problem, it is much worse if the wallpaper absorbs the aroma of obviously spoiled dishes.
- If the surface of the wall was dirty, then the coating will not only absorb all the dirt, but will also “let” it out, which will be very noticeable. If you plan to use light liquid wallpaper, it is recommended to first paint the wall in a similar color and plaster it over the paint.
- Since for repairs it is enough to wet the plaster heavily, then accidental contact with water on its surface can become an additional threat to its integrity. You can protect plastered walls with the help of applied varnish, but then we will be faced with the opposite problem - it will no longer be possible to repair minor damage with your own hands.
Silk plaster is not recommended for finishing walk-through rooms and kitchens, but for creating an elegant design in the living room it is an excellent option
Finishing work
On wall surfaces, silk plaster can create the illusion of natural silk and an original texture, but only if the composition of the finishing material you choose includes marble chips.
Quite often, ceiling surfaces are finished with silk plaster, because the shining ceiling looks luxurious, in addition, such finishing visually increases the height of the ceilings.
Less often you can find individual elements of a room, for example, niches or columns, decorated with decorative plaster; it looks quite impressive.
Some people decorate wall surfaces with silk panels; this decor looks exquisite.
Typically, silk plaster is used to decorate rooms such as a living room, bedroom or home office, but experts do not recommend using this material in a children's room, because it cannot be washed and it wears out quickly.
What is silk plaster?
An interesting fact: the phrase “silk plaster” drives many into a dead end, but a significant number of our fellow citizens have heard about liquid wallpaper, one way or another. At the same time, there is no difference between them - in fact, we are dealing with a common trick on the part of manufacturers, when everything new is just a well-forgotten old one. The more well-known material simply received a new name to spur consumer interest.
So, this version of decorative plaster is a finishing finishing material for walls. It should be recognized that this name still more accurately reflects the essence of the material than liquid wallpaper, since wallpaper in the classical sense of the word is always produced in the form of rolls. In fact, the mixture sold consists of two main components, namely, a binder (an improved wallpaper adhesive that holds the composition together) and a filler (there is a lot of room for manufacturers' imagination here, but silk fibers are always present). As a result, this mixture, diluted with water, is applied to the walls, making them appear to be covered with soft silk wallpaper.
To expand the decorative functions, the most unexpected components can be added to the composition - from sparkles to quartz chips.
Color solution
When decorating a room with silk plaster, to achieve the desired color, a special colorant is used in the form of a paste, which is usually sold in a separate package.
The brightness of the color of the plaster will depend on how much paste you add to the solution.
The color range of paste for decorative plaster, unlike the color for liquid wallpaper, is not so rich in shades, however, companies specializing in the production of plaster are constantly adding new colors.

Then the finished mixture must be left for 12 hours, after which the composition is mixed and, if necessary, a little water is added.
Advantages
The components of the coating are environmentally friendly components. They ensure unhindered air movement and do not allow dust to settle on the surface. Silk plaster does not fade and retains its original color for many years. According to consumer reviews, the imitation of a textile surface allows this finish to not lose its attractiveness for a long time. The fine porosity of the material has very low sound and heat conductivity. In the event of a fire, decorative silk plaster prevents the spread of fire and does not emit toxic substances.
It is especially beneficial to use this material in rooms with uneven wall surfaces, as in the photo. It will give an excellent leveling effect, fill cracks and depressions, and will not leave gaps and cracks near baseboards and window sills. It is quite easy to work with such material, even without experience. Anyone can apply the liquid mixture with their own hands without fear of spoiling the material.
Creating decorative effects
Visual effects are created only on the second layer of decorative plaster, this is done as follows:
- Silk classic. In the process of applying the 2nd layer, leveling is done with a Venetian trowel, but the movements should be wavy and longer than usual;
- Wet silk. Immediately after the 2nd layer has dried, it needs to be leveled with a roller, this is done in a circular motion;
Silk is pressed. In order to create the effect of crushed silk, the second layer is applied with a sponge, this is done using chaotic movements. Then after half an hour the coating needs to be leveled with a plastic trowel.
Some nuances you need to know when using wet plaster
