Home/Design and interior/How to use curtains to increase the height of a room

Whatever style the apartment is decorated in, it is difficult to imagine it without curtains or curtains. They are able to give the room a cozy and complete look, hide the shortcomings of the room and determine its style direction. Correctly selected curtains can visually increase the height of the room and visually expand it.

Curtains to increase space

Without having to resort to rearranging furniture, designers offer several tips to make the room more spacious and free.

  1. To do this, it is better to choose curtains in such a way that they are not short, but lie loosely on the floor.
  2. If a suspended ceiling is installed in the room, then you need to use a hidden cornice so that it does not attract attention.
  3. Curtains should be wide and completely cover the window when opened. By the way, one whole canvas is not suitable for curtains.
  4. In a small room, it is preferable to use plain curtains, without prints or patterns.
  5. Pleated, multi-layer curtains, as well as with draperies, will visually reduce the space.
  6. Vertical stripes on the curtains will visually expand and elongate the room.
  7. It is advisable to place curtains symmetrically on both sides of the window.

Designers recommend having several pairs of curtains for a room. They can be changed depending on the time of year. In the summer season, light, transparent and weightless curtains made in cold colors will look better. They will give the room a fresh and cool look. In cold weather, curtains can be in pastel, warmer colors to give more warmth and comfort.

Hidden curtain rod for low ceilings

The best option for low ceilings would be to use a hidden curtain rod. It has one important feature, which is that it is hidden behind the ceiling plinth, which creates the effect of curtains falling directly from the ceiling. The profiled ceiling cornice also looks great in low rooms. It changes the height of the ceiling, visually increasing it.

This gives a certain freedom of action during interior design, and the many options and modifications of such curtain rods make them very convenient and maximally functional. It is desirable that curtains for rooms with low ceilings be plain or at least with a vertical pattern.

Recommendations for owners of small apartments

When decorating windows in a small apartment, you should not choose dark curtains with large folds. Such curtains are good for large rooms; in small ones they will attract attention and visually make the room smaller. The right decision would be to choose curtains in the Scandinavian style and light, weightless curtains, without any decorative elements.

When choosing a material, you need to opt for materials that do not wrinkle, such as rayon. Curtains made of cotton fabric are also perfect: cambric, organza, tulle or muslin. It is worth giving up velvet, gabardine, matting and curtain fabric.

A small room will be decorated with curtains in delicate, pastel shades. There is no need to choose curtains that are the same color as the furniture. The window should not contrast strongly with the color of the walls, otherwise the room will seem even smaller.

It is also better to avoid large drawings on curtains. A horizontal or diagonal stripe will look great. A win-win option is curtains on which snow-white and light stripes or stripes in the same color scheme alternate (pale blue and dark blue).

Studio design with high ceilings in a Stalin-era house

A studio with high ceilings, thanks to a competent approach to using all available space not only horizontally but also vertically, has turned into a comfortable apartment for a young girl, which has absolutely everything she needs.

Layout of a two-level studio with high ceilings

An area of 24 square meters accommodates a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom with a shower, a separate bedroom with a dressing room and even a mini-office for work.

Usually, for small apartments, white is chosen as the main color - it allows you to visually expand the space. In this case, the author of the project, Tatyana Shishkina, decided that black would be the main color - and she was right. Black color blurs the boundaries between volumes, due to which the studio does not look broken into separate “pieces”, but looks whole and harmonious.

The almost four-meter height of the ceilings allowed the designer to arrange a second floor in the studio - there was an office and a bedroom with a dressing room. All areas are quite modest in size, but quite comfortable for one person.

The apartment is located in a “Stalinist” building, and the authors of the project respected the history of the house. General lighting is provided by overhead lamps, but on the ceiling there is a molded rosette for a chandelier, and the chandelier itself, although it has a very modern look, nevertheless clearly refers us to the classics.

When developing the interior of a studio apartment with high ceilings, the designer provided quite a lot of places where you can store things. The main thing is the storage system on the second floor. It is separated from the bedroom by a curtain hung on a high L-shaped cornice fixed to the ceiling. This method of dividing zones does not “eat up” space, and preserves the opportunity to retire for a night’s rest at any time.

In front of the storage system there was a place for a solid table - it will be convenient to work at it. A small chair nearby is quite comfortable and does not take up much space.

To prevent black color from having a negative impact on the nervous system, the designer made the floors, ceiling and part of the walls in the apartment light, this added dynamics to the interior.

Apartment design with high ceilings

High ceilings are a reason to pay more attention to the design of walls and cornices in order to make the space harmonious. In an apartment with complex geometry, the problem can be solved using color, lighting and a combination of textures.

Basic interior solutions

  • The leading style is neoclassicism with its noble materials and finely calculated amounts of stucco and gilding.
  • The connecting link in the decor of the rooms is the beautiful amethyst color chosen for the upholstery of upholstered furniture, as well as the rich brown palette.
  • Finishing of high ceilings with metallized coating and curtain lighting.

Living room

The main wall in the asymmetrical room leads from the entrance to a sharp corner with panoramic windows. It plays the role of a semantic center (the TV zone is located here) and a color basis (decorated in white with mirror inserts). Volumetric white panels visually soften the architectural disproportion; the rounded steps of the podium in front of the window and the smoothly rounded partition-wall of the additional room serve this purpose.

The relaxation area is formed by two sofas, a round coffee table and a round floor carpet. Dark brown shades of the floor, floor lamps, classic wall wallpaper and curtains combine beautifully with the white trim of the central wall and the lilac color of the sofas.

The round ceiling niche above the seating area is accented with a metallic coating. When exposed to sunlight or artificial light from a chandelier, the finish shimmers with brown and golden tones. Along the perimeter, the niche is illuminated with warm yellow light, creating the effect of depth.

The same technique helps to visually separate the ceiling plane from the wall in the TV area. There are four snow-white columns decorated with gilding. The design of a tall apartment follows symmetry: the upper lighting is duplicated by the lower lighting, built into the baseboards.

Bedroom

The color scheme of the living room is naturally continued in the design of the corner bedroom. The delicate lilac shades of the armchairs are complemented by the embossed upholstery of the headboard. The wall behind is lined with volumetric panels. Their tone is shifted closer to a calm beige palette, more appropriate in a bedroom interior. The adjacent wall, smoothly painted, is finished with classic white moldings.

The ceiling along the perimeter is highlighted with golden lighting, and in the central part - with gray-brown metallic, creating a harmonious ensemble with the floor and textile decoration of the room, as well as with a large mirror panel in the TV area.

Children's

The interior of an apartment with high ceilings is always a search for functional solutions. In the design of a child's room, the suspended ceiling near the window and in front of the wardrobe is highlighted with hidden LEDs. Closer to the inside of the room, a niche-slot was made in the ceiling for a light canopy separating the sleeping areas. Soft, warm light also flows from this niche, which supports the overall light palette of the room in beige, olive and coral shades.

Bathroom

The height of the ceilings in the bathroom design is emphasized by a gradient mosaic, laid out in dark gray to light beige and golden colors. The original floor and wall tiles repeat the colors used. In contrast to the fine pattern of the ceramics, huge mirror panels in the washbasin and toilet area play out.

When an apartment has high ceilings, it is important to find a balance in the spatial and architectural composition:

  • warm-colored curtain lighting,
  • accent niches,
  • combination of different textures (matte paint and metallic)

will help turn this feature into the dignity of the interior.

Room design with high ceilings

The design of a room with high ceilings differs significantly for the better from ordinary rooms with medium or low height. This manifests itself in qualitatively different lighting, both daytime and nighttime. Also, the ceiling design can involve an unlimited number of levels and combinations.

A high ceiling allows you to create a unique zoning of the room not only in plane, but also in height. For example, a work office and a relaxation area divided by height look amazingly harmonious in one room. This combination is chosen mainly by creative people, to whom inspiration can come at any moment.
