Traditional inlay techniques.
Marquetry is a typesetting wooden mosaic. The parquet designer tightly fits dies made of different types of wood (or tinted in different colors) to each other on a wooden board. Intarsia - when a pattern is formed from veneer plates of different colors and textures, cut into the base rock.

Like in a palace
“Little thing” with “thing”. Laying parquet with the selection of strips by color is expensive, since it requires high qualifications and taste from the master. Although, strictly speaking, such parquet is not considered artistic. It’s another matter if these planks are, for example, made of wood of different species, and folded into an intricate pattern - that’s where the real “art” is! To speed up the work somewhat and ensure accuracy, parquet floor workers began to use the so-called back in the 18th century. shields Fragments of the pattern made from valuable types of wood were assembled on a base knocked together from pine boards, and only then mounted in place. To create the design, various inlay techniques were used - intarsia and marquetry.
Artistic parquet - what is it? What is parquet, not simple, but artistic? In short, this is an elite floor covering consisting of piece or panel elements made from natural wood of various species, as well as using non-wooden materials. Simply put, this is a parquet “carpet”, the design of which surprises and delights with its originality. To create artistic compositions, modern craftsmen use panel or mosaic parquet, or combine piece parquet with ready-made decorative elements.
Drawings of artistic parquet
Methods for creating images
This floor design can be presented in various styles. For example, such a stylistic orientation as classicism involves the use of straight lines, strict geometric shapes and proportions in drawings. Art Nouveau coatings are most often represented by smooth lines, irregular outlines, and curved contours. The beauty of artistic parquet is that you can come up with an original, original and unique design that no one else has. There are several ways to create drawings:
- Intarsia. This method of creating an image is performed as follows: the fragments of wood that make up the pattern are tightly fitted to each other and cut into the common surface to a given depth. Then the front part of the design is carefully leveled and polished, creating a perfectly smooth surface.
- Marquetry is a kind of mosaic that consists of thin slices of wood of different colors and textures. Such fragments are glued to the base, resulting in a specific pattern. In addition to wood plates, marquetry involves the use of parts made of mother-of-pearl, ivory, and metal.
- Graffier is a fairly old method of applying a pattern to parquet. It was carried out by creating thin grooves, which were subsequently filled with black resin. This method is generally not used nowadays.
- Inlaying involves decorating a parquet board with various stones or metal parts cut into the surface of the wood.

Main types of drawings
In the design of artistic parquet, as a rule, several basic elements are distinguished. Let's look at them in more detail:
- Borders are parts of a design that are designed to perform certain functions, for example, dividing a room into functional zones. These elements can beautifully and elegantly emphasize the boundaries of various images or decorate the outline of a room. Often, an ornamental pattern is used as a border, and the elements of the ornament can be either strict geometric shapes or a variety of floral motifs or images of animals. The border looks great as an independent floor decoration, and in combination with a rosette it creates an unrivaled complete composition.
- Rosettes are elements of artistic parquet, which, as a rule, decorate the central part of the room. Rosettes are round or oval in shape and act as the main image. The drawing in this case can be made in the form of a symmetrical pattern or represent an artistic painting. As for the size of the outlet, it can be absolutely anything, it all depends on your taste and the size of the room.
- Modules are an element of artistic parquet, which represents a certain geometric pattern that is repeated several times within the overall composition. The modules are made from small pieces of wood connected to each other in the form of squares. Very often, a modular design is decorated with a contour of borders.
If you want your interior to look luxurious and elegant, causing the delight and admiration of all your guests, buy artistic parquet. With proper care, such flooring can last for many decades without losing its beautiful appearance.

Modern technologies
Modular (panel) parquet. Over four centuries, the technologies used by parquet floorers have generally changed little. Except that the equipment is different - lasers, milling machines with program control. Even now, not only boards or slats are used as a backing for panels, but also plywood or chipboard. As the front layer - not only planks and veneer, but also plywood facing board and even non-wooden materials. In factory conditions, both an ordinary layout is assembled on boards, from which a background “carpet” is then assembled on site, as well as modules, which are fragments of a complex pattern or ornament. Standard module dimensions are 400x400, 475x475, 600x600, 800x800 mm. Shield thickness - 15-22 mm. The minimum thickness of the decorative layer is 4 mm. But such a floor will barely withstand a couple of scrapes; much more practical and, accordingly, more expensive is a material with a front layer twice as thick.
Such patterns cannot be created from piece parquet. The panels are connected using rack inserts, dowels or the tongue/groove method.

Stacked (mosaic) parquet. The coating is sold in ready-made plates, assembled from massive strips that form a certain pattern, but are not glued together. It does not have a wooden base. The shape is supported by a transparent film or mesh applied to the front surface.
The master will remove it after the floor is completely laid and the glue has set firmly. Sometimes the plates have a backing - rubber or polystyrene foam. Dimensions of plates - 400x400, 480x480, 520x520, 600x600, 650x650 mm. The thickness, 15 mm, allows you to combine mosaic fragments with ordinary piece parquet.
Care
In order for artistic parquet to last as long as possible, it is necessary to follow the rules of operation and maintenance . The most important thing is to constantly monitor the indoor climate, first of all, this concerns the humidity level. If possible, try to avoid sudden temperature changes; a comfortable temperature for parquet is from 19 to 28 degrees. Be sure to keep in mind that artistic parquet is damaged by frequent drafts and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
Care should be carried out 3-4 times a month. If the floor is clean enough, then it can be wiped with a clean, damp material; if there is contamination, then use a chemical intended for the care of parquet floors.
Secrets of production
Materials. A variety of wood species are used to make artistic parquet. The base is made of pine, birch, aspen or alder. The front layer is made of more valuable oak, beech, ash, elm, hornbeam, as well as exotic wenge, merbau, etc. The rarer the wood, the more expensive the modular parquet. The closer the selected species are in their physical properties, the better the coating will perform in operation. Some manufacturers combine wood with other materials - stone, ceramics, metal, glass, even leather. Manufacturing companies not only offer ready-made compositions, but also carry out individual orders.
Laying artistic parquet with your own hands. Price for installation
Artistic parquet in Europe was considered elite already in the 12th century. Previously, it could only be found in the palaces of kings and their close subjects. Now it has become more accessible, but the price depends on the type of installation chosen .
- The selection of standard elements is the cheapest, as it involves working with a ready-made design solution.
- Full styling - having a design on paper, the master must bring the image to life. This installation is carried out according to individual projects and will be quite expensive.
Laying artistic parquet is a complex process for designers and parquet installers. The reliability and durability of the structure largely depends on how the base is prepared.
Decorative elements
For beauty and variety. A floor consisting entirely of parquet panels with a regular layout sometimes looks somewhat monotonous, especially in a huge room. To “revive” the interior, decorative elements are used.
Artistic parquet modules: rosettes from 40x40 to 80x80 cm are available.

- Sockets. Local multi-color artistic compositions made from several types of wood. The drawing is inscribed in a circle, oval, square, rhombus or other geometric shape. Sockets serve as the compositional center of the room or highlight certain functional areas.
- Curbs. Designed for framing architectural elements or interior items. The border emphasizes the shape of the room, “running” it around the perimeter, outlines the contours of columns, furniture, etc. Another option for use is as a border of functional zones.
How to prepare for installation?
Despite the design of artistic parquet, before laying it you need to perform 3 important steps :
- a technologist to the room where the parquet will be installed . Even if you do all the work yourself, the help of this specialist will not be superfluous. He will assess the condition of the room: temperature, humidity, base for installation. Consulting a specialist will help you avoid mistakes during work.
- Create a design project . You can do this yourself or entrust the work to a professional.
- Prepare estimates for materials and work . In the documents, it is important to take into account all materials, tools, costs of work, and calculate the total cost of the project.
When the project, materials and tools are ready, you can get to work and lay artistic parquet.
Installation recommendations
Laying such parquet resembles assembling a huge puzzle or mosaic. To create a decorative composition, two techniques can be used:
Intarsia
Involves inserting cut out patterns into the canvas. This inlay allows you to create a unique and original coating, which successfully combines large and small design elements, selected in accordance with the style and design of the interior. The assembly method is reminiscent of laying traditional piece parquet.
Marquetry
It is reminiscent of a mosaic, since it involves applying a sketch of an ornament to a panel base, and subsequently a monolithic canvas is assembled from veneered elements of tree species of different shades. In this case, the parts of the composition are shield modules.
We recommend: High-strength waterproof laminate
The installation of palace-type parquet is carried out only with glue to ensure the reliability and strength of the original picture.
Extraordinarily aesthetic and luxurious palace artistic parquet is a way to radically transform even the most inconspicuous room. The floor space, organized by finishing with artistic parquet boards, can rightfully become the main interior component, giving reason for pride for many years.
Advantages and disadvantages of artistic parquet
The coating has several advantages over conventional parquet:
- The user is given the opportunity to create an original floor that creates an individual style in the room.
- Artistic parquet does not require additional decorative elements. It can be compared to a real work of art.
- The floor has a long service life due to the use of hardwood. It does not lose its attractiveness over a long period of time.
- The coating has high environmental safety due to the use of natural wood.
- The porous structure of wooden samples retains heat well in the room and has thermal insulating properties.
- Artistic parquet does not require maintenance.
- Repeated grinding of elements is allowed.
The disadvantages of this type of coating include low resistance to mechanical stress, high cost of material and installation work. Laying the floor is accompanied by increased dust formation and noise.
Artistic parquet: prices per square meter
Like any work of art, artistic parquet has a high cost. Piece parquet from Russian manufacturers is the cheapest . For example, the artistic parquet “Amber Strand” is made from various types of wood, which allows you to choose both an economy option and a premium one. Cost of 1 sq.m. starts from 2000 rub.
Imported artistic parquet is more expensive. For example, material from Leonardo (Italy) - from 4300 per sq.m.
Elite options with inlay are made to order, their price depends on the wishes and requirements of the customer.
