If you are lucky with a private home or just a large and free kitchen, pay attention to sets with an island. Of course, it will take up several valuable meters, but the working area immediately becomes more convenient and ergonomic. Every housewife will immediately appreciate how much easier and more enjoyable it is to cook in such a kitchen! And at the same time - relax with a cup of coffee, chat with guests or just mind your own business.
What is a kitchen island?
The island is a separate multifunctional kitchen table equipped with floor cabinets and cabinets. It is positioned relative to the rest of the headset, and is therefore more convenient. In fact, this is an additional worktop with storage space. There are two types of islands: stationary and mobile. The former are mounted on the floor and are better suited for a full-fledged work surface, while the latter are good for flexible zoning of large rooms.
Installation and equipment
An island layout is only suitable for a spacious kitchen, and preferably a square or at least not too elongated one. The optimal area is from 20 sq.m., and if you do not need a separate dining table, then from 15-17 sq.m. The recommended distance between the set and the island is at least 100-120 cm, otherwise it will be inconvenient to walk there, use drawers and appliances. It is better to always calculate the dimensions of the island individually for each project. On average, its length is 180 cm, but it can be much longer. The standard length of kitchen modules is 60 cm, so you can build on these parameters. Or you can make a unique set to order according to your calculations and drawings.
The standard width of the modules is the same 60 cm, but this is inconvenient if you want to place cabinets under the countertop. In this case, you will need either open shelves, or there will be a blank wall on one side. But under a deep tabletop of 90 cm or more, you can place cabinets in two rows so that they open on both sides. The height of the island usually corresponds to the height of the working surface of the main set - 85-90 cm. But if you want, it can always be made higher: for example, under a bar counter or for the convenience of tall family members.
How to choose
All kitchens with an island differ in design, placement of kitchen units, materials and styles. Having decided to make a comfortable and practical work area, you need to wisely choose the best option that suits a specific layout.
Before choosing one or another island kitchen option, you must:
- Consider moving water and drain pipes if you are placing an island area with a sink or dishwasher.
- take care of conducting electricity to the table when placing an electric hob on it;

An island kitchen can be multi-level, smoothly transitioning into a bar counter or table.
Location of kitchen units and island
For convenient operation of the room, the optimal width of the passage between the island and the kitchen furniture is considered to be at least 1 meter. If you make the passage smaller, it will be problematic to open drawers, cabinets and use household appliances.
In each individual case, the distance from the kitchen to the island is calculated individually. For small rooms, the compact size of the island is selected, and in spacious rooms its length can reach 2 meters.
The island dimensions of 180 x 90 cm are considered standard. As for non-standard dimensions, their production will cost more.
But you will have a great opportunity to make a practical and convenient layout, ideally suited to the characteristics of the room and your personal wishes.
A non-standard island kitchen can have the usual width of 60 cm, the depth of the table and cabinets in it can be made 90 or 120 cm.
The acceptable height of the table is 90 cm, so that it is convenient to prepare food at it. You can make the necessary furniture to order.
Form
As for choosing the shape of the kitchen island, then:
- it can completely repeat the shape of the room itself. For example, in a square room it is advisable to make a square table, in an elongated room - a rectangular one;
- semicircular tables look aesthetically pleasing, but they take up more space. These options are suitable for country houses with huge kitchens. With a semicircular island layout, two people can prepare food in one kitchen at once without interfering with each other at all;
- Oval and round islands are quite rare in designs. They should completely follow the shape of the wall cabinets on top. The color design of oval furniture is chosen to be neutral and discreet. Since the form itself is exclusive and original.
There are also wavy, zigzag and asymmetrical islands.
Kitchen layout with island
Islands can differ not only in size and height, but also in overall configuration. For example, in a square kitchen a square one is more appropriate, in an elongated kitchen a rectangular one is more appropriate, and in large combined kitchen-living rooms you can even install a semicircular table. And of course, build on the shape of the main set so that all the elements are in harmony with each other.
Corner kitchen
To ensure that the island does not stand out from the overall picture of the corner set, you need to calculate its dimensions and location so that the entire system folds into a neat rectangle. This solution looks more elegant and harmonious, and at the same time more functional during operation. For convenience, you can put another floor covering directly under this area: for example, tiles, and laminate in the rest of the room.
Direct (linear) kitchen
A linear set allows you to experiment more with the shape of the island, without getting out of the composition. Consider countertops with rounded edges or crescent-shaped islands. This solution is more expensive, but it looks stylish and fresh.
U-shaped kitchen
The U-shaped set is massive in itself, so choosing an island for it is not easy, and it will fit organically only into the largest and most spacious kitchens. Typically, work surfaces, a sink, a stove and household appliances are located on the main segment, and the island is taken out as a dining area.
Island shapes and layout
Designers have the following rule: what shape is the kitchen? This is the island. In other words, in a rectangular room a square table will be lumpy, and vice versa. For a very spacious kitchen, a round or oval table in the center is suitable.
The layout of the kitchen also dictates the placement of the island. The most common kitchen options:
- straight;
- corner;
- in the shape of the letter P;
- The kitchen area occupies part of the combined space.
The island can consist of modules of different levels. It's comfortable. The tall module will serve as the hostess's workplace, and the lower one will serve as a dining table. However, in a small space this option is not suitable.
Island functions
An island is not only a stylish interior solution, but also a very practical find. After all, additional work space in the kitchen is never superfluous. At the same time, you can arrange it completely to your taste and according to your preferences.
Island as a storage place
The remote island is no different from the modules of the main set: anything can be built inside. If a functional and discreet storage area is important to you, hide cabinets and drawers behind smooth, neat fronts. And if you love open designs and shelving, place beautiful kitchen items on open shelves: stylish utensils, jars of cereals and spices, various decorations in the Provence style.
Island as a dining area
At its core, a kitchen island is not much different from a bar counter, so you can safely adapt it to it or to the dining area. To do this, choose wider tabletops and high bar stools to go with it. And don’t take important equipment or storage areas that you will constantly have to use to such an island.
Island with hob
Massive stoves are rarely brought to the island, but flat hobs are completely fine. It is much more convenient to cook when the work table is right in front of your eyes, and the pots are boiling behind you. You don’t have to constantly run around the kitchen so you don’t miss anything.
Island with sink
It is quite difficult to move the washbasin to the island, because you will have to work with communications. But this is very convenient: finally, the desktop, food, stove and household appliances will not be accidentally splashed with water.
Island with dishwasher
Another convenient trick is to move the dishwasher onto the island, which often does not fit into the main set. But to do this, measure the distance to the kitchen especially carefully so that household appliances can be used normally.
Options for organizing an island kitchen
The island surface is multifunctional and can be used in many different ways. The main thing is to approach its arrangement competently and think through everything down to the smallest detail.
An island kitchen can be used for:
- installation of hob and sink. In this case, the zones are separated by a work table, the width of which should be at least 30 cm;
- arrangement of the cutting table and hob;
- location of a spacious sink with two sections;
- organizing an additional workplace;
- placement of the dining area.
Each individual option has its own characteristics and advantages.
Additional work surface
This organization of a kitchen island is the simplest and most classic option, which does not require the transfer of communications. The island part is used as a dining table or as an additional surface.
Kitchen island with breakfast bar
A kitchen island with a bar counter looks stylish and rational.
Ways to place a bar counter:
- using a wide tabletop;
- using different tabletop heights.
The advantages of this design include:
- functionality. The bar counter is used as a dining area and allows you to organize a competent storage system;
- zoning of the premises. The bar counter will advantageously divide the room into a cooking and eating area;
- originality of appearance.
Dining table and island
This option assumes:
- use part of the island as a dining table. At the same time, the tabletop width is recommended to be at least 90 cm;
- installation of a separate dining table;
- production of rounded tabletop shapes to make the room safe and comfortable to use.
Most often, a large rectangular table is used in such designs.
In shape, an island with a dining table can be:
- direct. In this case, it is a continuation of the island and is suitable for elongated rooms;
- corner. It joins the island at a 90 degree angle. Suitable for square rooms;
- T-shaped. That is, the table is perpendicular to the base.
Island with hob
An island with a hob is quite easy to set up. To do this, just opt for electrical equipment. Of course, you will have to wire the outlet, but this is a minor problem.
There may be problems with installing the hood. To do this, it is recommended to purchase a special hanging model and use the services of a professional technician to install household appliances.
You can hide the air duct by lowering the ceiling level. An excellent choice would be a plasterboard structure or tension fabric. If the ceilings are narrow, it is recommended to opt for a recirculating hood.

Kitchen island with sink
In an apartment building, installing an island with a sink may cause some difficulties with the implementation of the project. To install water supply to the sink, you will have to raise the floor level and install a pump.
Table with open shelves or display cabinets
Perfect for a studio apartment. A cabinet with a display will look stylish and unusual. It can be supplemented with LED strip or built-in furniture lamps. You can place souvenirs, dishes and even books on open shelves.
Small kitchen island table with or without wheels
For a small apartment, installing an island table on wheels is suitable. An excellent choice would be to use a narrow bar table.
If necessary, it can be easily and simply moved from place to place. For example, move it to the wall so it doesn’t interfere or move it to another room for receiving guests.
Modular designs are often an extension of work surfaces. They are in demand when hosting parties. Since they can easily be rolled out onto the veranda, into the living room and into any other room where guests are.
Interior styles
A kitchen island can harmoniously fit into any interior, but it looks best in styles that themselves imply space and monumentality. If you don't know where to start, we offer you several interesting options.
Kitchen with island in classic style
Classic is always pretentious monumentality, bulky wooden furniture and expensive materials. In the foreground are symmetry and correct geometry, so an island with an L-shaped kitchen, arranged in a rectangle, looks good. Countertops made of natural or artificial stone will fit perfectly into a classic interior. Just keep in mind that real marble or granite is heavy and requires careful handling. But modern imitations are practically indistinguishable in appearance, but they are more practical and easier to use.
Kitchen with island in loft style
For a loft, an island kitchen layout is one of the most successful solutions. At the same time, the industrial style does not require such strict adherence to proportions, unity of details, textures and shades. If you like kitchen islands as separate expressive accents, they will look like family in the loft. The bar counter is another classic attribute of bohemian studios, where this style began. As for materials, pay attention to rough wood with a pronounced texture or simple, laconic metal structures. Even minimalistic and purely functional steel modules, which are used in a professional kitchen, will fit into the loft.
Modern style kitchen with island
Contemporary is an interesting modern movement that has absorbed the features of both classics and modern technological minimalism. Use simple and as laconic forms as possible, combine natural and artificial materials in one set. Modern storage systems, push-to-open systems, as well as other laconic and technological solutions fit perfectly into the contemporary space. The main colors are simple: black, white, gray, beige, brown. But any bright or deep complex shades are suitable for accents, so such a kitchen in any case looks stylish and relevant.
Kitchen with island in Provence style
Provence is always an abundance of details, decor, cozy wooden furniture, open shelves and beautiful textiles. Therefore, an island in the kitchen only creates additional space for self-expression. You can adapt it to open shelves for storing cozy little things. Small, neat curtains instead of cabinet doors look interesting, but then choose the most unpretentious and wear-resistant fabric. Don’t forget about whitened and aged surfaces, carved decor, decoupage and other decorative details that will complement the set with an island in the Provence style.
Kitchen with island in high-tech style
Technological high-tech itself gravitates towards solid and functional solutions, and at the same time towards large areas. A kitchen with an island with acrylic fronts, steel elements and chrome details looks very organic. Use the latest hobs, neon or LED lighting, glass and fancy futuristic-looking bar stools. Above the island, a separate ceiling structure with spotlights or pendant lights looks stylish: it creates the illusion of a floating block.
Style selection
Of course, the variety of styles in interior design is amazing, but it is important to choose one style that meets the needs and financial capabilities of the homeowner. Now designers recommend using one of the following directions:
- Classic - a luxurious and rich kitchen, where there is an abundance of massive wooden furniture, stone, marble and other natural materials. Strict lines, stained glass and expensive textiles are the main features of the classic style in kitchen design.
- Country or so-called rustic style will create a warm and cozy environment. The furniture can be wicker or made of wood; the space can be complemented with paintings and colorful curtains, wooden beams and floral motifs.
- Modern is a style that involves the use of glass and metal. The tabletop has a streamlined shape, the appliances are hidden inside the furniture, and the fittings are hidden. Colors: white, grey, black and metallic. Island shape: circle or square.
- Minimalism is an ascetic style that is preferred by reserved and business people. It is characterized by simplicity and conciseness, while every item located inside the kitchen must have a functional purpose.
In principle, you can choose other styles to decorate the interior of a kitchen with an island, however, it is in these directions that were proposed earlier that it looks more appropriate and successful. Among the most attractive examples, it is worth noting a classic-style kitchen with imitation wood fiber, combined with surfaces presented in a neutral shade of warm milk. Atmospheric and clean, spacious and formal white kitchens, stylish and modern black ones are also popular. An equally attractive option is the classic combination of snow-white or milky facades and chocolate wood.
Color solutions
Most often, an island and a kitchen set are one harmonious and complete set. Therefore, colors, materials, shapes, fittings and other details are completely repeated. Choose the same configuration of cabinets, shade of wood or acrylic, material and color of the countertop - and you won’t go wrong. But there is another interesting trick: turning the island into a separate accent. Then it is enough to preserve one common feature: for example, the shape and geometry of the cabinets and countertops. And you can experiment with colors to your heart's content. Contrasts look good: a black set with a white countertop and a white island with a black work surface. And for modern interiors that gravitate towards colorful accents, choose an orange, yellow or red island. It’s not for nothing that these colors are often used in restaurants, because they simultaneously invigorate and awaken the appetite.
Design of a kitchen-living room with an island
If you have a spacious kitchen-living room at your disposal, an island layout is the best tool for functional zoning of the room. Place a dining area or bar counter on the island - and you won’t have to think about partitions, plasterboard structures and bulky shelving.
Small kitchen with island
An island for a small kitchen is not the most convenient option, at least in the classic version. But there are alternatives: a small square island will perfectly replace a dining table, and the mobile design on wheels can also be moved as needed. Pay attention to islands with through shelving instead of massive closed cabinets - they are visually lighter.
Features of use
This kitchen looks like a kitchen unit and a high island table in the middle of the kitchen, surrounded by chairs. Often this is not a simple dining table, but several combined cabinets into which you can build a sink, dishwasher, mixer, blender and other technical wonders that make cooking easier.
Original design
The island has a dual role:
- Expansion of the working area . Working on a couple of kitchen cabinets is good if you are not going to cook anything more complex than ordinary cabbage soup. But if you're making a cream cake, full of decorations and covered in a thick layer of cream, you'll need extra surfaces. The island provides them.
- Dinner Zone . An island table perfectly copes with the main task of any table - you can have breakfast, lunch, dinner on it, or gather around it with the whole family. The only thing that can get in the way is the height. For an island, it usually exceeds the standard, especially if you are going to build a sink into it. So you'll have to order special high chairs
