Kitchen design in modern style: 130 photos of design projects

The most diverse and farthest from its initial incarnation is the Art Nouveau style. And all because of confusion in the interpretation of the name. Emerging in an era of decline and depressive moods in society, at the beginning of the twentieth century it was a new style. In any incarnation of modern kitchen interior design, it is noticeable that the trend has absorbed resistance to the classics in the form of minimalism, flexible lines of upholstered furniture in imitation of the East and new trends of laconic industrialism. Today this is a new embodiment of the concept of “modern” (translated as “modern”), such a multifaceted and recognizable style.

Kitchen design in the Art Nouveau tradition meets the desire for a practical and comfortable interior

Features of the Art Nouveau style and its origins

Modern is either a modern or “modern” style (do not consider it a tautology) today only vaguely resembles the original. As it was known a century ago, this movement in art and design only vaguely resembles the modern kitchen interior reimagined in the 21st century.

At its core, modernism is close to other modern trends - minimalism and hi-tech, although it has a number of differences

The design principle is based on everyday functionality and atypical solutions, often going beyond the conventional boundaries of stylistic canons

It once resembled the embodiment of graceful forms, asymmetry and sinuous lines reminiscent of the blow of a whip. A new direction in design is modern from our contemporaries, but something in common is discernible:

  • laconic lines that you never tire of admiring;
  • harmony of all components;
  • muted shades;
  • hidden luxury of high-quality finishing, as in the photo of the modern kitchen.

Appearing in the era of decadence, this style was gradually supplanted by urban styles, and at the turn of the millennium it absorbed their features. But it was the symbiosis of laconic lines of functional household items, modest decor and careful selection of finishing materials that made it so popular.

In this style, every detail is carefully thought out; there is no place for decorative trinkets.

The first thing that catches your eye is the abundance of glossy surfaces

Today it is rather postmodernism in its purest form, in which high-tech, minimalism and neoclassicism are discernible. When designers are ordered something stylish and original, they offer a beautiful interior in a modern Art Nouveau style based on a mixture of classics and modernity.

The Art Nouveau movement continues to evolve, and the new solutions offered are impressive in their creative diversity.

Immediately after its emergence, this style gained popularity and its own interpretations in different countries. Modernists were looking for new forms and some kind of average model, but it never became intercontinental:

  • to this day the French dispute their primacy in the form of "Art Nouveau" or new art;
  • in Germany it was called “Jugendstil”;
  • Italians insist that this is their “liberty”;
  • Americans know this design trend as the Tiffany style.

Over time, Art Nouveau began to lose relevance, but received a revival at the end of the twentieth century.

Style Features

  • This is expensive: all the furniture is made to order, a standard set will not fit here. And it will take a long time: preparing the project will take time, you need consultation not only with the designer, but also with the artist.
  • This is a historical direction, in its pure form it is difficult to combine with others. It is unlikely that you will be able to get by with just decorating the kitchen; most likely you will have to arrange the entire house in this way.
  • Art Nouveau requires space and air. The kitchen should be large, with high ceilings. It is better to combine it with the dining room, and an asymmetrical figured arch between the rooms is an indispensable component of the interior.
  • We recommend drawing inspiration from the works of the greats: Alphonse Mucha, Georges Fouquet, Antonio Gaudi, Fyodor Shekhtel and other artists of the era.
  • Art Nouveau, Art Nouveau, Art Nouveau - these are all names of the same direction. Some designers also include Art Deco here, which is its continuation.
  • Predominantly natural colors are used. Bright ones are also acceptable, but they should not be pure, complex. By the way, white and black are rarely found in classic Art Nouveau.

Kitchen furniture in modern style

This style solution is often chosen for spacious kitchens. But its laconicism and functionality are considered ideal for small modern kitchens. The glossy surfaces of the sets, imitating polished marble, reflect light well - the visual effect of increasing space and filling it with sunlight.

Furniture facades can be painted with enamel, covered with plastic panels or PVC film

Modernism is also good because in any catalog of self-respecting furniture production there is kitchen furniture in the Art Nouveau style. It is distinguished by:

  • large working surface area;
  • calm pleasant shades;
  • simple geometry of shapes that are pleasing to the eye;
  • attractive texture of facades;
  • harmonious design;
  • thoughtful functionality of each compartment;
  • technological contents (rails, latches, guides, magnets against unplanned opening, closers);
  • ideal combination of all materials and fittings;
  • attractive appearance;
  • There is the use of imitations of polished stone in countertops (marble, onyx, jasper, agate, malachite).

Such kitchen furniture is always pleasing to the eye. It is devoid of ostentatious luxury and pretentious elements, although an interesting idea is felt, especially if the models are made in Italy. Each kitchen or dining room set has a recognizable design signature.

Furniture for the dining area - narrow counters or compact tables

Advice. With beautiful furniture, you should not distract attention to a window with a lot of textiles. Multilayer curtains, ruffles and frills are unacceptable here. A modest translucent curtain of a suitable shade on the ceiling cornice is enough. Small objects that distract attention are also inappropriate - put everything in the closet!

Textiles in Art Nouveau, if used at all, are used to a minimum

Open shelves are not suitable due to their impracticality; built-in appliances are a priority

Despite the dominance of straight lines in modern style, modern kitchens often inherit their early twentieth-century origins - the fluid grace of curved forms. But most often they are found not in cabinet furniture, but in dining sets, in particular in the form of high-back chairs and half-chairs. Wood and plastic are used equally for their manufacture.

Textiles, decor and accessories

As mentioned above, textiles are used little in Art Nouveau. Curtains are chosen two or three shades lighter than the color of the wall decoration. They are complemented with translucent, weightless tulle, which allows maximum light into the room during the day. Modern versions use Roman, roller or Japanese panel curtains. The decorative content is very ascetic. It is enough to hang a clock or a mirror on the wall, a home photo gallery at the entrance or a pair of sconces. Simple vases, plates on supplies, indoor plants, containers of fresh fruit or pots of spices are placed on the shelves. Tools for work (scoops, spoons, spatulas, whisks) can be hung in a row on a special metal handle, which is used to decorate the kitchen apron.

Tips for choosing finishing materials

Obviously, if you managed to purchase an Art Nouveau kitchen in a delightful shade, then it is better to update other surfaces by choosing the right color and texture. But which cladding should you prefer?

WallsLiquid and textured wallpaper for painting, Venetian plaster, mirror tiles to visually expand the kitchen, a stylish collage.
FloorMarble or granite porcelain tiles, any other wide format seamless tiles, self-leveling floors, wood imitation in beautiful shades and textures.
CeilingNoble smooth surface with painting, stretched fabric, “floating” or multi-level ceiling.

Mirror stretch film on the ceiling and glossy surface of waterproof laminate on the floor are optimal solutions for modernism

Lighting in a modern kitchen

Theoretically, the Art Nouveau style requires a large lamp with a bronze body and a crystal shade. Even better is a chandelier over the dining area. In practice, you can use other design ideas, but metal in the lamp body is still welcome. Smooth design shapes will fit into the Art Nouveau style. Asymmetrical lamps look good.

If you can’t find anything suitable, you can choose a symmetrical design with clear straight lines - this is Art Deco, a logical continuation of Art Nouveau.

Color spectrum

The priority shades of the Modern kitchen are soft pastel shades - blue-gray, beige, light brown, ash and cream. In such an environment it is cozy and comfortable, but if the “triumph of life” is not enough, you can add a modular picture (from several blocks) in bright colors.

In modern modernism, up to three different shades are allowed

It is advisable to hang a landscape on the wall in pure colors of natural origin - a sunset, branches of autumn foliage or a mountain waterfall. But this should be the only image.

This is interesting. The Japanese claim that contemplating several different paintings on the walls of one room is tantamount to simultaneously listening to music of different styles from adjacent rooms.

As a bright accent, it is permissible to hang one picture on the wall

Judging by the new designs of kitchen furniture for 2017-2018, aristocratic white and combined models are still in demand. In the catalogs of Italian furniture designers, the palette of modern kitchen sets is varied. In priority:

  • White color;
  • champagne;
  • lactic;
  • pearl gray;
  • smoky;
  • graphite;
  • opal;
  • olive;
  • lingonberry;
  • cognac;
  • beige;
  • caramel;
  • mint;
  • emerald;
  • indigo;
  • black (varnish or glossy).

In addition to these favorites, textiles for windows are selected - a similar shade, but a more transparent or blurred color.

From a stylistic point of view, compact blinds or Roman shades are suitable for windows

Attention! If several types of wood are used in the kitchen interior (furniture, flooring, finishing), it is difficult to choose something similar in shade and texture. Experts recommend relying on contrast, for example, striped zebrawood and bleached oak. It is fashionable to combine light walnut with chocolate shades of wenge wood.

All-white, gray, beige or caramel will look elegant in the interiors of “a la modern” kitchens.

Modern furniture sets are characterized by narrow line handles made of polished steel.

Advice. Pay attention to the color of fittings and metal parts in the kitchen design. Priority will be chrome plating or blackening if the interior is in gray tones. Bronze, copper or gilding are better for warm colors. But there shouldn’t be a lot of shine, especially when there are varnish or glossy surfaces everywhere.

Kitchen lighting is not limited to one ceiling chandelier; on the contrary, additional lamps above the work surfaces, in the walls, in the furniture and even in the floor are welcome

The history of the Art Nouveau style

The modernist style in interiors and architecture was born in the early 20th century, around 1918, and lasted until the 1970s. It assumed complete separation from historical trends. From the very beginning, Art Nouveau put functionality first. This revolution in architecture and art was associated with many insurgent ideas that changed the world and influenced life today not only in the field of interior design.

Much furniture readily used in modern interior design was designed during the modernist period. The interior designs still look very modern and some even innovative, which proves their timelessness. Modernism in the kitchen interior will certainly not go out of fashion quickly, and the correct location will highlight the most interesting accents.

Art Nouveau was born in the first half of the last century, but still amazes with its combination of minimalism and elegance. Modernist interiors are dominated by neutral colors, as well as steel, glass and wood. The kitchen should contain furniture with interesting geometric shapes and fabrics with monochrome patterns. However, it is enough to look at the presented photo gallery to ideally organize the interior in this stylistic direction.

Furnishing the room

For modernism, space is important. Therefore, L-shaped kitchen sets fit well into this style - they are the easiest to follow the rule of three working points without using additional furniture.

When using symmetrical or linear sets in large kitchens, you can allocate additional space for cooking using the island area.

Furniture should be simple in shape, but streamlined, with rounded corners, seamless transitions between sections. The minimalistic set is complemented by a set of table and chairs of unusual shape or made of interesting materials. Transformable furniture is often chosen for the studio to save space.

The technology used is predominantly built-in, designed in the same style. These should be modern multifunctional household appliances that are used more than once or twice during the cooking process.

Additional decor to create a unified interior

Decor in the Art Nouveau style is expressed mainly not in additional interior items, but in colors, textures, and the appearance of furniture and equipment. Household appliances from the same collection or made in a similar design can decorate the kitchen.

Glass inserts on cabinets and shelves, chrome parts such as handles, posts and taps will help give the set a “zest”.

There should not be many non-functional items used only for aesthetics. This could be 2-3 posters or photographs, a painting on the wall.
