Tiles for the floor on the balcony - types and methods of installation

Pros of coverage

As an option for covering the balcony floor, builders recommend using tiles. Therefore, you need to learn more about this material, what types exist, how it is installed and why you should choose this particular alternative.

Pay attention to the advantages of facing flooring:

  • Strength. Even if the loggia is glazed, this does not mean that the flooring is protected from temperature fluctuations. But it is the tiles that can withstand such conditions perfectly. Therefore, you can be sure that it will last for quite a long time.
  • Security. Few people think about the fact that when the moisture on the balcony increases, the likelihood that condensation will appear increases significantly. Properly chosen flooring will not lead to injuries, or rather, to sliding on the surface. In addition, the floor surface can be easily maintained, stains are quickly washed off, and water is easily wiped off. This is especially important if there is no window on the loggia.
  • Decorative flooring. If you have already decided on the style in which the loggia will be made, then the floor with the image you want will perfectly complement it. After all, the range of images on the surface of the flooring is quite large.

We decorate the interior, decorate flower pots. Mosaic. Master Class

I continue to inspire you) This time I want to tempt you to take up mosaics. It's warm outside now and it's time to do some crafts to decorate the interior of your home, balcony or garden. Almost everyone has flowers in clay pots in their house, which don’t look very pretty. Maybe decorate them with mosaics? It's not difficult at all, the work is very interesting and exciting. What will you need? Tiles that you can always find. If you don’t have any tiles left after the renovation, go visit your neighbors, they will never refuse you) Moreover, all you need is a very small amount of these tiles. For mosaics, you can also use broken dishes, for example, beautiful plates with a border. Well, as a last resort, in the most generous case))), you can buy a ready-made mosaic. Are we watching a master class?

Oh, and I almost forgot) If you don’t want to get dirty with mosaics, you can decorate the pots with fabric. See below how)

Well, when you practice using clay pots, you can decorate something more complex with mosaics, a table lamp or a mirror. But I'll tell you about this next time)

Now, while it’s warm, the flowers in pots will stand in the garden or on the balcony, and in the fall they will delight you with their beauty and originality on the windowsills or shelves. So, before you start decorating them with mosaics, think about choosing the color of the tiles. It is necessary that the finished pots do not “scream”, but match the color with other objects in your interior. The Foundation group of companies can tell you how to properly arrange your home. On the company's website you can read articles from leading designers and learn how to beautifully decorate an interior, how to combine colors in the interior, how to make renovations yourself and much more.

Let's get to work. We take a clay pot and draw the lines of the future drawing on it with a pencil

Using wire cutters, chop the tiles or plates into small pieces and glue them to the pot

Types of tiles

Today, manufacturers can offer several flooring options. They differ in the quality of raw materials and, directly, manufacturing technology. Each one is worth considering:

  • Ceramic or tiles. The main materials from which this type is made are clay and sand. When the tile already has a shape, it is processed in a kiln, then the top of the flooring is covered with a special glaze. It is the glaze that gives the ceramic coating its tint.
  • Porcelain tiles. Such cladding is made in this way: the clay solution is subjected to strong stress, after which the material is fired, and the firing temperature is significantly higher than for tiled cladding. As a result, the flooring looks like natural granite. This flooring is durable and resistant to temperature changes. Porcelain tiles can be produced in their pure form or covered with glaze. The second coating option is distinguished by a large selection of shades and a variety of surface textures. That is why this type of flooring is considered the most aesthetically pleasing and attractive in design. The disadvantage of this type of flooring is that it is overpriced.
  • Clinker tiles. Such a floor will serve reliably and for a long time. The main advantage of clinker coating is significant wear resistance. It is also cheaper in price compared to porcelain stoneware and has a range of advantages, including resistance to high and low temperatures.
  • Quartz vinyl coating. This is one of the new types of polymer tiles; its structure consists of PVC and quartz sand (about 80%). A floor made of this material has high strength. It is the polyurethane film that is applied over the cladding that makes this floor more resistant to abrasion.
  • Cotto. Initially, such tiles were made without glazing on the surface, which is why they used to come in two colors - brown or yellow. Nowadays, glazed coatings can be found more often, and this has significantly increased the range, matching the colors and textures.

Flooring selection

When selecting tiles as flooring for a balcony in a residential building, it is worth considering the following basic conditions:

  • the coating should not be heavy, especially if the loggia is glazed;
  • It is important that the floor can withstand temperature changes, otherwise the structure of the coating will be destroyed;
  • when choosing a floor, you need to carefully familiarize yourself with the companies that manufacture flooring - it is better to give preference to companies with a good reputation for quality;
  • size will also be an important point, because on a loggia with a narrow area it will be completely inappropriate to use large tiles; in this case, medium or small will do;
  • the color must fit into the interior;
  • The texture of the cladding is important, because an overly smooth floor will be slippery, and if it is too textured, then such a floor will become difficult to care for.

The relevance of installing floors on the balcony

In new buildings, the homeowner uses the available space rationally. On the balcony, a home craftsman can easily arrange a library, an office, a playroom for children or a winter garden.

Floor tiles for a modern balcony: installation

Experienced builders recommend not skimping on glue - then the floor on the balcony will last much longer and will not deteriorate from excess moisture and temperature changes. Do-it-yourself installation must be done when the air temperature on the balcony is not lower than 10 degrees Celsius:

  • The first step will be preparing the base. First, remove the old flooring and all debris. It is recommended to make a new screed. Place the solution, polyethylene, and then the adhesive on the base. Select a screed that is suitable for the room.
  • Be sure to apply markings intended for laying tiles. This will help avoid shifts, especially if this is your first time doing such repair work. To cut the fragments, use a grinder, cutter or traditional glass cutter.
  • The glue is diluted according to the instructions: it is applied using a special spatula. Since the adhesive dries quickly, do not apply it to more than 1 m2. Distribute the glue evenly, without excess, so that there are no streaks.
  • With markings, the cladding is glued from any edge, however, it would be more correct if the whole elements are laid first, then the corners are covered.
  • After a day, the seams must be treated with grout, the lining must be polished well with a specially designed compound or simply with a dry cloth.

It is important to note that the glue dries no earlier than after 24 hours.

Installation techniques

If you are the owner of a wide loggia, then this will allow you to lay out the covering in the most interesting way possible, to be more precise, with any pattern. There are six main types of installation. They are worth checking out:

  • Basic or classic. Installation is carried out without seams - this is one of the simplest options that requires practically no special effort, except for the fact that you need to maintain the evenness of the coating.
  • At an angle. This installation option makes it possible to visually enlarge the room. It is not at all difficult to lay out the cladding without images diagonally. The disadvantage of such floor finishing will be significant costs, because a lot of waste will remain.
  • Chess. If you want to give your loggia some originality, then, without a doubt, use this installation. You can also save a little on the elements, since they will be different in size and shades.
  • Installation in running form. Install rectangular tiles of the same color. The brick-like installation looks great.
  • Laying tiles on the floor in a herringbone shape. Lay out any textured coating. Particularly good is a floor that looks like a natural raw material like wood or stones. It is very unusual to use such a pattern near walls or in the middle of elements with contrasting colors.
  • No less interesting and unusual will be the installation in the form of a mosaic. This method does not require professionalism, so it is not difficult to do it yourself. At the same time, the user will not spend much money, and the floor will delight him for a long time and lastingly. The main advantage of this option is the ability to use all types.

The floor can be laid in your own way or combined several options. Either way, the floor will be attractive and cheerful.

Tiles on the balcony

Choosing tiles for the balcony

When selecting tiles for the floor on a balcony, you should remember the main condition: the floor covering on the balcony should not be too heavy , especially if it is already landscaped and glazed. For this reason, massive types of tiles with maximum wear resistance (PEI class 5) should not be purchased; it is better to give preference to a lighter option - tiles with wear resistance PEI 3.

If you have not yet glazed your balcony, we recommend our article. After reading it, you will learn which windows are best to install on a balcony and loggia, and what to look for when choosing them.

Laying the “Warm Floor” system under the tiles is a popular option for additional insulation of the balcony. Read about which system to choose and its installation on our website.

An interesting article about the external cladding of a balcony with siding is on this page https://balkonsami.ru/otdelka/vneshnyaya/kak-obshit-balkon-saydingom-svoimi-rukami.html

To prevent a small balcony space from seeming even smaller, you should not lay large tiles on it. Most experts agree that the optimal size for balcony floor tiles is 40x40 cm . For the same reasons, choose the color of the tiles: dark colors will visually reduce the volume of the room, so for the balcony you should choose a coating of light and bright shades, especially if it faces north.

Tip: To ensure a uniform floor, buy all the necessary tiles at one time, with a margin of 5% - 10%.

If the balcony is not glazed, its floor is often wet due to precipitation or even covered with ice. In such conditions, tiles with a smooth surface on an open balcony (loggia) can be hazardous. A better option is tiles with a rough surface (or embossed).

On an open balcony, relief tiles are a better option
