Shelving in the living room - a stylish and modern solution for storing things

The main advantage of the racks is the openness of the shelves and the absence of doors. This design adds space and space to the living room, especially if the shelves are not filled with things. Racks are perfect even for small spaces. And the variety of their shapes and types will allow you to choose this piece of furniture to suit any room design.

We show ten beautiful living rooms using non-traditional shelving with an interesting look. They are also practical - so take note.

With “unfinished” shelves

Such a rack will make the living room visually more spacious, since its shelves are not completely closed, and therefore they look wider and larger than they actually are. The wall on which you place this rack will remain as empty as possible thanks to the thin back of the product - this will also have a positive effect on the visual space of the living room. And the unusual “snake” shape will add a unique twist to the interior.

We create with our own hands

A shelving unit is one of the few pieces of living room furniture that is easy to make yourself. In this section we will try to examine this question in detail.

Let's start with the fact that we first need to decide on the choice of material from which our rack will be made.

  • Let me make a reservation right away: wood, MDF or chipboard and plywood are considered ideal.
  • Drywall is easy to use, but not very durable, so you can’t put anything heavy on a structure made from it.
  • Glass and metal are expensive and difficult to process at home.

The tools we will need are:

  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • saw or jigsaw;
  • level;
  • roulette;
  • screws and self-tapping screws;
  • pencil or chalk for marking.
  • In general, the first thing to start making a rack is measurements.
  • Having taken measurements of the wall where the shelving will stand or the floor and ceiling, if the structure is a partition, we cut out the load-bearing supports from wooden beams. The timber is ideal for them and will perfectly withstand the load on the structure.
  • The next step is to fasten the corners of the frame with self-tapping screws and strips to make the rack stronger.
  • After this, we cover our structure with MDF or chipboard along the entire perimeter. The result is a box with longitudinal and transverse slats without a back wall, which is actually the simplest shelving.
  • Well, if you want to modify the design, you can attach the back wall, paint the rack, and varnish it. In general, we modify it to suit your taste and design.
  • If the rack is designed to span the entire height of the room, then it is better to fix its base to the floor and the top to the ceiling. This way the structure will be much stronger.

    Next, you can watch several useful stories on making this furniture at home.

    With modular design

    Modular shelving, assembled from individual blocks, opens up space for creativity. In the living room, from such a designer you can assemble a storage system of any shape, changing its style at will whenever you wish. A modular shelving unit made of blocks of two different colors - for example, white and dark brown - will look very contrasting and expressive.

    With partially closed shelves

    This design is universal. Due to the many open shelves, the rack will not overload the room even with large dimensions, and the interior will remain free and light. And partially closed compartments will allow you to hide unnecessary things that clutter the living room. In the photo below they are not concentrated in one place, but are dispersed throughout the rack and therefore are not noticeable.

    Ladder-shaped

    An open ladder shelving unit will make your living room more creative and will highlight the main interior decorations: they can be placed on the upper “steps” so that they are not covered by the shelf on top. A shelving unit in the form of a ladder will serve as a functional partition for a combined living room or small studio. It takes up less space than a ceiling-length rectangular cabinet and is not as bulky, so the room will remain visually spacious.

    Tree view

    You can use the rack not as a partition, but as an independent decorative decoration. For this purpose, for example, a creative storage for books and magazines in the form of a tree trunk with branches is suitable. This is an expensive option, but it will make the living room very original. This rack will fit perfectly into a Scandinavian or eco-style interior.

    What to choose

    The racks are not intended for storing sets or individual dishes on them so that they do not accidentally break, but with individual orders you can increase the width of the shelf and arrange your favorite dishes so that they can please the eye.

    Shelves are made from wood or its derivatives. The most commonly used wood is pine, beech, mahogany, and oak. Of the derivatives, preference may be given to laminated chipboard or MDF.

    It is very rare that metal shelving is made to order in a high-tech style.

    Shelves made of tempered glass are also common. Such designs make the space airy and light, even if they are quite large.

    Racks made in the form of mini-walls, with closed sides and a back wall, are also in demand. The shelves can be partitioned transversely along the length and are made in various original variations. Some sections are closed with doors, and a TV can be installed in the center.

    These are the advantages that modern shelving has, but perhaps you like the old version and would prefer a wall to a shelving unit. The choice will always be yours.

    Hanging and narrow

    If the rack is needed not for storage, but for placing small items and decorations on it, choose the narrowest design possible - it will look the most elegant. In this case, not only floor-mounted, but also hanging options are suitable: such a rack can be placed both on the wall and on the side of the cabinet.

    Transformable rack

    A very convenient option for the living room is a universal shelving unit that opens and closes like a book. When closed it looks like a classic cabinet, and when open it turns into a creative storage system with double the number of shelves. You can always adjust its size, appearance and capacity. It can open to the entire width of the wall or fit compactly in the corner of the room, as in the photo below.

    Modern shelving for the living room

    New-fashioned furniture designs are designed to make the interior stylish and comfortable. Sometimes, designer models can compete with works of art. Floor-standing, hanging, modular - all of them are ready to satisfy every taste and needs of the buyer. Representing a universal storage system, the shelving unit in the living room interior is appropriate in any style direction - from classic to modern.

    Among the obvious advantages of such furniture:

    • Convenient storage of many small-sized items;
    • assistance in organizing space and putting things in order in the room;
    • visual lightening of the interior, which is not cluttered with heavy pieces of furniture;
    • multifunctionality and great variability of designs;
    • mobility, that is, easy movement around the house if necessary.

    Shelving unit for the living room

    There are many types of shelving for the living room. The simplest option is a small bookcase that can easily fit near any free section of the wall or in the corner of the room. Modern examples of this furniture are very elegant and light, they bring the spirit of minimalism to interiors, complement them without standing out, harmoniously fill the space and make it more ergonomic.

    A small narrow shelving unit in the living room can be used as a TV stand, decorative vases, photographs, etc. A big plus for electrical appliances in this case is that you do not need to make holes in the furniture for electrical wiring - open shelves and the absence of walls make the process of connecting equipment as simple as possible. If the bookcase is placed near the window, you can put indoor plants on it, and they will receive their portion of natural light.

    Wall rack for the living room

    Lightweight open walls act as an alternative to bulky traditional furniture in living rooms. Here you can successfully place books, souvenirs and much more. In addition, at the same time it is also a TV stand for the living room. Its lightness and large capacity will allow you to avoid cluttering the space without losing storage space. It can be either an independent unit or part of a furniture “designer”.

    Corner shelving for the living room has also proven itself to be excellent. Moreover, we are not necessarily talking about the usual placement of a shelving unit in the corner of the room. Reverse corner walls can accommodate a huge library or video library, while the living room will look as stylish and modern as possible. This interior solution will definitely appeal to people who are passionate about and value ergonomics and order.

    Wardrobe-rack in the living room

    If you need not only open shelves, but also closed cabinets, a combination cabinet may be the solution. Many furniture manufacturers offer custom-made production of such furniture, so you can decide for yourself the number and type of drawers, door design and other parameters. As a result, you can get very original shelving for the living room, in which you can not only display beautiful books and souvenirs, but also hide documents and other personal items from prying eyes.

    Display rack in the living room

    By tradition, in the living room we display the best examples of festive tableware - crystal glasses and glasses, porcelain sets. To furnish this “exhibition” in the best possible way, you need glass shelves. And this is where a dish rack for the living room, which looks like a display case or a slide, comes to the rescue. The visual advantage of such furniture is obvious - the dishes seem to float in the air, the shelves do not clutter up the space at all, while they are durable and can withstand significant weight.

    Shelving partitions for the living room

    If there is a need to divide a room into zones, you can turn to various methods. But the most functional of them is the open shelving partitions for the living room. This way you will not only solve the zoning issue, but will also be able to use the partition to your advantage. It will simultaneously play the role of a storage system, and this will significantly save space, allowing you to abandon the closet. In addition, you will have access to items on the shelves from both sides.

    Another advantage of such a partition is the transparency of the structure. This means that the light from the window, especially if there is only one in the room, freely penetrates into the fenced off part of the room. If you use a blank partition, it will create an obstacle to natural light and its spread, and this will force you to acquire additional lamps. It is enough to equip an open shelving unit in the living room with decorative lighting to improve the lighting of a certain area.

    With sloping shelves

    A rack whose shelves are located diagonally looks much more interesting and creative than the classic one. Schematically, it resembles Christmas tree branches, so it will look organic in “natural” interiors with an abundance of wooden furniture and a natural palette.

    Advantages of shelving in living rooms

    The rack is an open design of shelves located one above the other. Their main feature is that they can be of various shapes, structures, sizes and textures. Here are the advantages of shelving in front of the walls:

    • the rack is the lightest harmonious design that fits into any interior;
    • it does not clutter up the room, is mobile and can be applied to any style;
    • easy to assemble and install without the help of specialists;
    • has an affordable price.

    Modern designers have developed shelving options on the horizontal shelves of which you can place a TV, and the side shelves are adapted for various decorative items, accessories or books.

    In such racks, a video system will look harmonious, on which you can install video equipment in the center, and place the necessary disks on the sides, organizing a single space.
