An excellent attribute for relaxation is a brick grill with a stove. You can cook almost anything in it. You can make a brick grill with a stove yourself. For this, a project is drawn up, certain materials and tools are prepared.

Advantages and disadvantages of a stationary oven with barbecue

When in doubt whether to build a stove with a barbecue for a summer house or a private house, it is worth studying all the pros and cons of such a design. They are clearly reflected in the table:

Advantages of a do-it-yourself brick grillMinuses
There are many options for use - you can bake meat, fish, poultry, vegetables, barbecue. If there is a stove, it is usually used for preparing first and second courses Material costs - a stationary structure is much more expensive than a portable one
No need to pre-marinate foodsRisk of error in construction - if there is a serious miscalculation, the outdoor grill may turn out to be useless
Large dimensions - can cook for large groupsTime for construction - timing depends on the complexity of the project, skills, number of workers
Uniform cooking due to proper heat distribution over the entire area of the fryer
Choice of fuel – you can use wood or coal
Long service life - with proper construction, an outdoor stove will last for many years

The table proves that a brick grill with a stove has more advantages than disadvantages.

If you have no experience in such work, then it’s worth studying the video - such material allows you to clearly see everything and understand it better.

Brick barbecue decoration

The grill-broiler is fixed on steel corners, which are pre-attached to the masonry walls using anchor bolts. After which you can move on to lining the walls and shelves. In this way, we can significantly improve the appearance of the fireplace. You can also leave several through holes in the overall structure for storing stove utensils. The main structure is faced with various decorative materials - wood, artistic forging elements, natural stones and ceramic tiles. If necessary, they can be combined to create a real masterpiece of art. Which of these materials to choose depends only on our desire.

Choosing a place for a stove with a brick grill

When deciding on an outdoor grill, you need to take into account many details. One of them is the right choice of location.

One of the important points is the direction of the smoke. If it constantly ends up in the neighboring area, then it will definitely not be to everyone’s liking. To check, you need to light a fire and trace the direction of the smoke.

For a brick kiln to be safe, you need to build it taking into account:

  • distance from trees and other plantings;
  • distance from buildings - smoke should not reach them;
  • remoteness of other flammable objects;
  • protection from wind and rain - a canopy can be provided;
  • artificial lighting or the possibility of providing it so that you don’t have to cook in the dark.

You might think about installing a brick oven near the gazebo or building such a structure in the future. In warm weather, you can gather in it - the owner does not need to stray far from the food being prepared, and the fresh air will only whet your appetite.

Projects of brick barbecues with a stove

The brick barbecue project with a slab is another important stage and the next step after finding the right place. First you need to think about the configuration and dimensions of the future stove. It’s better to start with a sketch to visualize everything clearly.

You can draw up a project yourself, find a ready-made version on the Internet, or contact specialists. The drawing is important for clarity and determining the sequence of work and calculation of materials.

Brazier oven with closed stove

A grill with a closed hob is equipped with walls on the sides and back. The stove will only be open from the front. At the same time, such a grill can be equipped with an oven.

The closed-type cooking stove is attractive because it makes the food special. Cooking is reminiscent of a Russian oven.

Brazier oven with open stove

A brazier with an open stove is attractive because less material is required to construct the structure. Another advantage is more space. There is nothing above the stove, so you can use containers of any height.

Oven grill with oven stove

A grill with an oven is a design with several functions. You can cook different dishes on it. An important advantage is that you can use different compartments of the structure at the same time - cook soup on the stove, bake kebabs on the grill and bake poultry in the oven.

Construction of a barbecue oven

Constructing a structure with your own hands from brick involves a step-by-step activity. If you prepare everything correctly, draw up a good project and plan the work correctly, then the whole process can take 1-2 days.

Materials and tools for work

The stage of preparing materials with tools for construction follows the selection of a site and drawing up a project. The list of necessary items depends on the features of the structure being built:

  • clay – special baking compositions are sold;
  • cement with sand and gravel;
  • fireclay brick;
  • doors to the firebox and vent;
  • grate;
  • fittings;
  • roofing felt sheet;
  • finishing materials - decorative stone, tiles and adhesives for them, heat-resistant paint;
  • metal corner profile.

In addition to materials, you also need tools:

  • bucket with shovel;
  • spatula and trowel;
  • furnace hammer;
  • plumb line;
  • level;
  • Bulgarian;
  • concrete mixer (you can get by with a suitable container);
  • gloves.

Foundation

This is where the construction of a brick grill with your own hands begins. You need to make the base as follows:

  1. Dig a pit. You need to go deeper by about 0.3 m. This indicator should be based on the weight of the structure and the density of the soil - the denser it is, the more you need to go deep. Make the width of the pit 0.1 m larger than the dimensions of the structure.
  2. Use wire or steel rods for reinforcement.
  3. If the soil is sandy, then make formwork.
  4. Make a bed of sand and gravel. This layer must be watered and compacted.
  5. Pour in the solution.

Further work should be suspended for 1.5-2 weeks. This time is required for the foundation to stand and acquire the required strength.

Ask a Question

Important! It is better to concrete the area with the barbecue or line it with stone. Its dimensions must be at least 3 m².

Preparing the mortar for masonry

The masonry is made from two types of mortar. It is better to make the firebox from fireclay clay, since it is a good fire-resistant material. In the store you can find it under another name - kaolin.

Don't miss: What is the best way to paint the grill so it doesn't get burned and is it worth doing?

Those parts of the masonry that will not come into contact with fire can be made from a mixture of sand and cement. Its quality is influenced by the brand of cement, the choice of which determines the proportions of the components:

  • for M75 cement you need 3 parts of sand;
  • for grade M50, 4 parts of sand are required;
  • for M25 cement you need 5 parts of sand.

It is better to prepare the solution from the specified brands of cement.

Ordering a brick grill oven

An order is a diagram that marks the stages of masonry step by step. It cannot be ignored by either beginners or experienced craftsmen. Thanks to the order of the barbecue with the project, you can know exactly how many bricks are required, in what sequence to lay them, and how to carry out other work. As a result, the entire process is greatly simplified.

The ordering can be done independently. To do this, it is important to follow the basic rules:

  • 4 rows of masonry on the combustion chamber;
  • 3 rows for barbecue;
  • 6 rows of masonry on the fireplace;
  • 3 rows for the casing.

The ordering of the barbecue, carried out with errors, is fraught with a significant deterioration in the quality of the structure. When you are not confident in your capabilities, you should seek professional help.

Laying the plinth

This stage should begin when the foundation is solid. To build a barbecue oven out of brick, a solution is poured into the prepared formwork - an average of 2 bags of cement is required. Be sure to wait time for the mass to harden.

It is important to take care of the waterproofing layer. It is optimal to use roofing felt for this. Bricks are laid on top in one row and filled with mortar.

If you plan to have a stove and barbecue combined into one brick structure, then the masonry is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. First lay out 2 rows of bricks. They should be solid and repeat the shape from the layout - most often it is a rectangle. Be sure to straighten the corners and remove excess mortar. Check the evenness of the rows with a plumb line.
  2. Install the ash stove door on the 3rd level.
  3. Lay out a continuous 4th row.
  4. Install grate bars on the next row and lock the ash door.
  5. Lay out a continuous 6th row.
  6. Complete the next row with a firebox door.
  7. Lay out 2 continuous rows.
  8. At level 10, start building a stove chimney.
  9. Block the firebox door opening on the next row.
  10. At level 12, start working on the cooking stove and hearth.
  11. On row 14, start making the chimney channel. At the same stage, proceed to the construction of the back and side walls.
  12. On rows 21-23, organize the overlap of the hearth. It should be semicircular. The desired shape of the brick is achieved using a grinder.
  13. Make levels 24-31 continuous. From the 26th row, start drawing out the smoke channel.
  14. On the 32nd row, install the pipe. For the hood you can use the same materials as for the stove.

Important! The stove must be designed for the specific needs of cooking. This concerns its size and the ability to regulate the temperature.

brazier

If you plan to build a structure with a brick grill, then you need to take care of the ash pit. The material for its manufacture must be resistant to high temperatures.

When installing the door, a gap is created between it and the brickwork. It is left because the metal expands when heated. The height of the hob should be based on the dimensions of the door. The optimal parameter is 84 cm.

Heat must penetrate into the roasting pan without obstruction, so it is necessary to leave a gap of 2 bricks. Thanks to it, coal cleaning will also be easier.

If the masonry is done correctly, the door is securely fixed. Additionally, you should use wire, securing it with bricks.

An important element for a barbecue is the woodshed. Usually a separate wall is formed for it. To make the building look aesthetically pleasing, you can make it from quarter bricks. The woodshed must have an arch and a roof. An additional wall inside provides a support point. There should be a space left in the center where the lattice will be laid. To cover the woodshed, you can use a sheet of galvanized iron.

Ask a Question

Important! All seams need to be fastened. For this, a cement mortar is prepared. Upon completion of the work, the seams will need to be sanded.

Walls and smoke collector

When the brazier and woodshed are formed, you need to simultaneously finish the back wall of bricks and lay out the rows from which the arch of the woodshed will be formed. Afterwards, you need to make passages through which smoke will escape from the fryer. There should be 6 of them in total.

Covering the firebox must be done using flooring. You need to lay an insulating layer on top, and then install the hob. You also need to form a chimney out of bricks.

Finishing

The final stage is necessary for decorative purposes. The stove needs to be covered with beautiful material. More often, preference is given to ceramic bricks and decorative stone.

To finish a structure with a brick barbecue, the surface must first be leveled. Plaster is used for this. If a decorative stone is chosen for finishing, then it is laid on a special solution. Silicone should not be used, it has a bad effect on quality.

Phased construction

The construction of the entire structure consists of the following stages:

  1. Construction of the foundation.
  2. Construction of a gazebo.
  3. Construction of a barbecue.

The following are the general stages of construction and points to which special attention should be paid.

Selecting a location and preparing the foundation

When choosing a site for construction, you should proceed from considerations such as distance from home. If you plan to constantly eat in the gazebo, naturally, it is better to install it next to your home. If it is intended exclusively for relaxation and gatherings with guests, it is better to choose a place remote and closed from prying eyes, for example, in the far corner of the garden.

In addition, it should be borne in mind that the gazebo itself is intended not only for feasts and meals, but also for relaxation. This means that you need to choose an appropriate place - for example, in the shade of trees. In order for the entire structure, gazebo and barbecue, to stand confidently and firmly, you need to lay the foundation correctly. In principle, the entire structure has a fairly moderate mass; any type of foundation is suitable for it: strip, reinforced tile or pile.

Recommendations from experts

The following tips will help improve the quality of the design and the aesthetics of its appearance:

  • round the sides of the stove - this will make it look more attractive;
  • lay the ash pit made of bricks, with the edges cut at an angle (45°) - the ash will crumble freely during operation;
  • to shrink the bricks, use a rubber hammer - this is effective and does not damage the material;
  • install doors so that you can open them with your left hand (for left-handed people with your right hand);
  • When installing stove fittings, use a level;
  • For a firebox made of fireclay bricks, lay them on edge - the space will be used efficiently and food will cook faster;
  • Fireclay bricks and ceramics should not come into contact - be sure to lay basalt cardboard between them.

To set up a barbecue with a brick stove, you will have to spend a lot of time and effort, but the result will pay for it all many times over. A well-organized design will last a long time, and it can be used to prepare a variety of dishes.

Construction guidelines

The first step in a barbecue area is to lay a foundation, since the weight of a brick oven is quite significant. There are 2 ways to construct a foundation: rubble and in the form of a “floating” concrete slab. For the first one, you will have to remove the top layer of subsidence soil in order to rest on a layer of clay. The dimensions of the pit should be 50 mm larger than the dimensions of the furnace in each direction.

A rubble foundation is laid by filling a dug pit with stone and pouring all the cavities with a liquid solution of 6 parts sand, 1 part M400 cement and 1 part lime. The upper platform of the foundation is also leveled with this solution, and after it hardens, waterproofing is laid from 2 layers of roofing material. To install a “floating” slab for building a barbecue, the following step-by-step plan is followed:

  • on the site, dig a pit 200 mm larger than the furnace in each direction, the depth of the pit is 300 mm;
  • compact the bottom and pour 150 mm of coarse crushed stone, which also needs to be compacted;
  • place wooden formwork protruding 100 mm above ground level;
  • tie a reinforcement cage of 10-12 mm rods with a 100 mm cell and lower it into the pit, resting it on the sides of the formwork;
  • make concrete from cement, sand and crushed stone in the following proportions: 1: 3: 7, respectively, and pour the foundation;
  • after a week, remove the formwork, and after 3 weeks, lay 2 layers of roofing felt and begin construction of the barbecue.

For laying a barbecue, it is best to use a 1:1 clay-sand mortar with the addition of a special oven plasticizer and a small amount of cement (about 20%). Fireclay stones should be laid on fireclay mortar, avoiding binding with the facing ceramic masonry. The thickness of the seam should be maintained within 5 mm, the remaining mortar is removed with a trowel.

Each row of bricks should first be laid dry and, if necessary, chiselled or split. After that, each brick is soaked in a bucket of water, and then placed in the place where the mortar has already been applied. Light tapping is perfectly acceptable. At the end of each row, the horizontal is checked with a level and the vertical is checked with a plumb line. The smoke circuits of the barbecue are wiped from the inside with a damp cloth so that no solution remains on the walls.

Openings for stove fittings are made with a reserve for metal expansion of up to 5 mm, and for laying arched vaults of an outdoor fireplace, templates of the required shape - circles - are prepared in advance. They are usually made from wood or plywood, sometimes from plasterboard. When the barbecue is completely laid out, you should let the solution harden for about 2 days (depending on the weather), after which you carefully do the first heating.
