Style Features
Brutalism appeared in Britain in the 40-60s of the last century. Its founders are Peter and Alison Smithson. It was they who introduced the name of the style into use. Initially it was used in architecture, but over time it took root in interior design. Its features include naturalness and roughness. It is believed that the style is chosen mainly by men. However, such interiors are often found when arranging apartments and houses for married couples. Despite its severity and conciseness, brutalism can help create a comfortable and cozy environment.

The apartment is a reflection of the taste and character traits of its owner. Therefore, a brutal interior is not suitable for everyone. At first glance, it looks similar to a loft. It is characterized by: deliberate roughness, rectangular shapes, functionality, and spaciousness.

The texture of the materials is not hidden, but, on the contrary, is exposed. Every element of the furnishings is functional. In such an interior you won’t find any unnecessary things used only for decoration. Brutalism is characterized by simple, even rough forms. The interiors are free of any frills. Design in the style of brutalism is chosen by strong, solid natures who are not afraid of bold experiments and are ready to express their view of the environment.
Connecting elements to create a harmonious ensemble.
It would seem that camouflage pants are not so easy to combine with other items of clothing. However, this is a misconception. Military trousers go well with completely different items, both in a weekend look, and in casual and more elegant ones.

There is nothing easier than creating a comfortable masculine look that is suitable for outdoor activities or a walk. All you need to do is pair camouflage pants or cargo pants with patch pockets with a polo T-shirt. For footwear, you can choose either comfortable sneakers or boots. As for accessories, you should pay attention to wide belts and backpacks, which can accommodate everything you need on vacation.
Military style is close and understandable to men and is usually unattractive to women
If you need to dress warmer, then you can complement the ensemble with a military coat or a single-breasted raincoat, which is perfect for a walk in the autumn park.

Everyone has to follow office dress codes in modern life. However, camouflage print has also found its application in the creation of men's clothing.
Military style for modern men is just right
Pay attention to jackets with a fitted silhouette and small panels on the sleeves or sides, dark green or dark brown trousers with pressed creases, button-down shirts, a flannel blazer and a knitted scarf. And you're done! You look both elegant and with a certain grain of masculinity.
Military style is the choice of real men
Or pack flannel pants, a denim jacket, a cap, leather boots and a coat. A button-down shirt with long sleeves will also complete the look.

Style concept
Any style in the interior appears under the influence of a person’s character and characteristics. Almost everyone strives to make their home and the environment in it comfortable and cozy. The name “brutalism” comes from the English word “heavy, rough.” However, this does not mean that the interior in this style will be uncomfortable and bulky. Properly selected furnishings in combination with finishing materials can transform any room in accordance with the taste preferences of the owner.

The main emphasis in the design of the apartment is on naturalness and roughness of textures. The kitchen countertop may look like ordinary planks, and the walls may look like concrete slabs. However, deliberate negligence allows you to create an ideal interior where every item will be in its place.
Brutalism provides conciseness and restraint in forms, details and accessories. It is rooted in the philosophy of the origin of life. There are no unnecessary details or decorations. The style is ideal for modern, purposeful young people. It can accommodate both studios and country houses. The only condition is a sufficient amount of space and light.
Materials and finishing
This direction is applicable only in bright, spacious rooms due to the finishing features. As in the loft, there is a display of the materials used. For finishing the following materials are used: concrete, metal, brick, wood, glass.
Materials are not hidden behind drywall or tiles. Everything natural is a priority. Indoor structures can be visually heavy, which is why the style requires space.
Brick is used to decorate the walls. In this case, the masonry is not hidden. The material is coated on top with a special protective compound. Imitation of brickwork with other materials, such as wallpaper, is allowed. But in this case, the entire concept of style will not be fully conveyed.

Concrete walls and floors are a priority. Gray or dark tiles can be used for finishing. On a concrete floor, you can put carpets of the same or similar color as the finishing material.
Metal frames are appropriate in such interiors. The structures are not hidden, but left in plain sight. It is allowed to use copper, which adds warmth to the environment.
Brutalism involves glass surfaces. They can be used for partitions, countertops and other interior items. Wood is also allowed for finishing. Wooden beams near the ceiling are exposed and add masculinity and brutality to the interior. Natural materials are used to decorate the apartment. Their imitation is allowed, but it must be of the highest quality.
Wood is most often used for flooring. Walls and ceilings can be left in their original form, made of concrete or brick, with colorless varnish applied to them. Sometimes surfaces are decorated with metal sheets. They are also used to create railings and other structures provided in the interior.
What is a brutal man?
“...I'm a wild man
... tobacco, fumes and stubble”
(c) Seryoga Shnurov
“What?!” A real man!” - the male creature will say, scratching what was lying around in his underpants of unsurpassed freshness. And this is the main misconception of those who want to have stunning success among the ladies!
A significant part of men are aware that young ladies often prefer the brutal type, but not everyone thinks about what the female imagination draws to this concept. And the differences in the worldview of the sexes must be taken into account! So, potential brutalists, make yourself comfortable...
Who is this brutal?
- brutality is more of an appearance. Well-developed muscles, slightly unshaven, a little rough... as for me, Gerard Butler is a typical brutal guy.
- with a slight stubble, such a masculine voice. Banderas! Antonio!
- masculine "bad boy" charm...stone wall! My favorite Colin Farrell!
- appearance: everything is banal here: Bond. James Bond. Expensive watches, slight stubble and athletic features under a good suit; character: confidence, confidence and confidence again. Sometimes turning into arrogance (but within the bounds of reason); responsibility. Behavior: silent. A careless half-smile. And oh, that look! As if he knows everything about you!
Meaning of the word
A short historical excursion will tell you about the Roman senator, the lout Marcus Brutus (lovingly called him Brutus), who deliberately and fatally stabbed Caesar. Naturally, such impudence negatively colored the word brutus, and began to mean “rude, heavy, stupid, bestial.” Centuries later, the grievances faded away and brutality appeared as a tempting and sexy concept.
How are things going in linguistics? Let's start with English: brutality - rudeness, cruelty, animal instincts; in German brutal - cruel; in Spanish - animal, grandiose; among the French - sharp, rude; Italian brutto agrees with the French. In the great and powerful, synonyms for brutality are cruelty, rudeness, extreme masculinity . But from this place you can go into more detail. According to the sexological dictionary, masculinity is the bodily, mental and behavioral characteristics that distinguish a man from a woman (male from female), i.e. The more a man looks like a mammoth hunter and a protector from misfortunes, jaws and bad weather, the more masculine he is! Then what does an expensive watch and suit have to do with it? It’s just been the case since primitive times: a good breadwinner can provide for both himself and his tribe. Naturally, this was paramount for the survival of the offspring, so such a specimen was the first guy in the village, especially among the female population.
Times and customs have changed, but the genetic principles of partner selection have remained the same, even if some will deny it (supposedly, today they don’t run after a mammoth, smoked heffalump in vacuum packaging can be bought in a supermarket). So how do you declare your wealth? Naturally, in appearance and what comes with it! But expensive surroundings are not the key to success! The real primitive Mr. Bond was also physically well-coordinated, active, vigilant, hardy, fearless and had increased shaggy hair. He acted more than he spoke (that’s why he managed to defeat his enemies and make children).
Brutal style
Translated into modern times, a brutal man will correspond to his prototype, but in a civilized manner. I mean, an athletic look (gym helps!), slight unshavenness (secondary sexual characteristics were not abolished), a pleasant, subtle smell (not a Klinsky runner or a failed perfumer). You have to be careful with “armor”: flashy colors, rhinestones, and a complex cut will not add brutality - such people were usually sold into slavery. But high-quality clothes in the classic masculine genre, such as a tweed jacket and traditional jeans, slightly covering the laces of nubuck or suede boots are quite suitable for an everyday brutal look. And if women tend to change their images, then a real man is characterized by constancy and the desire to remain himself. That’s why it’s so important to give preference to high-quality, dense, stable materials that will tell you everything. The main thing is not to overdo it: slight negligence, spontaneity in the choice of accessories is even welcome - and the brutal candy wrapper is ready!
The image of a brutal man
What's under the wrapper? Here the stylist will no longer help: either self-education, or go to a psychologist for a glass of tea. Self-confidence is the main distinguishing feature of a brutal man (not to be confused with the self-confidence and conceit of show-off pseudo-brutals!). He won't spread his feathers to gain favor. Rather, he will pretend that he does not notice the girl whom he has actually dreamed of for half his life, and if the opportunity arises, he will let her know that she involuntarily found herself in his field of vision. In his behavior there is only dignity and firm confidence in what he is doing. He is always ready to stand up for himself and his loved ones. To assert himself at the expense of those who are weaker is beneath his dignity. In the company of equals, he is relaxed, good-natured, but firm in his unchanging convictions. Sometimes harsh and assertive. He prefers to talk to the point, listen and observe more - thereby expressing his participation.
Such a balanced, but not chilling person inspires a sense of reliability and stability - and this is exactly what female genetics requires.

Color spectrum
The main color of the design is gray and its shades. Brutalism welcomes naturalness and authenticity. Therefore, only a neutral color palette is used. In addition to gray, black, white, copper, etc. can be used. Bright shades that violate the concept of style are not used in interiors.
Note! Designers recommend choosing furniture in lighter colors to add coziness to the interior.
The color palette should be absolutely neutral. It is necessary that the furnishings be in complete harmony with it. There are no bright accents in the interiors. Textiles, decor and all other furnishings should be combined with each other in color.

The black color of the walls allows the furniture to look more advantageous. However, interior items should be much lighter so that the atmosphere does not become too gloomy and depressing. Some designers resort to the contrast of black and white.
Furniture
Furniture should correspond to the general concept of style, be simple and functional. When choosing a setting, first of all, they are guided by the principle of asceticism. The interior should not contain unnecessary details, so any thing should perform a specific function.
When choosing, you should give preference to natural textures and natural materials. Brutalism uses strict geometric shapes. Built-in wardrobes and transformable furniture would look appropriate in the interior.

All furnishings must match the style, be simple and functional. One of the main principles of brutalism is to limit the use of furniture and accessories. All of them have a rough texture and a simple geometric shape. The use of high quality equipment is allowed in the interior. Modern equipment must carry a functional load. The furnishings should not contain items that are not used by the owners of the premises.
Preference should be given to upholstery materials such as leather or fabric. Solid wooden furniture also looks organic in the interior. Often its surface is artificially aged so that it organically fits into the style concept. The furnishings must include upholstered furniture. This could be a leather sofa or rocking chairs. It is important that they are comfortable and contribute to a comfortable rest.
Rougher than a loft
Related to minimalism and loft, brutalism is still more radical. It’s not for nothing that when describing this style, designers often say “honest.” Yes, brutalism is an honest style “without embellishment”. Moreover, this is an uncompromising postulate, implying a radical rejection of any decor. From adherents of the movement, strict asceticism and loyalty to natural simplicity are required. Let's remember how the loft was born: it was initially forced into interiors when industrial premises began to be converted into living rooms. It was then that the loft fell in love with its owners, but in the beginning it was an urgent need. Brutalism is always a conscious choice, dictated solely by your own views on life. Despite the emergence of brutalism into the group of modern trends, the style has both ardent fans (however, the word “followers” would be more appropriate here) and tough opponents. “Such crude restrictions contradict the nature of man, his right to freedom,” they believe, without accepting that for “brutalists” the rejection of everything unnecessary is freedom. However, it’s sad but true: the brutal direction is not for everyone. There is even a kind of comic test memo that you need to check before you decide to decorate your apartment in the appropriate style:
- Are you a cleanliness fanatic? (Get rid of unnecessary furniture and decor that collect dust - cleaning will take no more than an hour!)
- Are you single and too lazy to clean? (Cleaning has never been so simple and easy!).
- Do you despise sentimentality and decoration? (Brutalism only allows you to shed a stingy male tear).
- Are you a rationalist who values simplicity and clarity? (Perhaps there is no clearer direction than brutalism).
By the way, unlike other styles that are gradually leaning towards eclecticism (for example, loft has become friendly towards classic chandeliers and glamor), brutalism remains in its monumental original form. Our new JESTER collection, reflecting simple geometric shapes in their most seasoned ascetic form, will definitely be the perfect complement to such an environment.

Lighting
Brutalism provides for maximum natural light. Therefore, it is optimal if there are several windows in the room. The style fits perfectly into the design of rooms with panoramic glazing.

Original designer lamps look harmonious in the interior. Brutalism excludes the installation of bulky classic glass chandeliers. Often it is the lamps that become a bright accent that enlivens the interior.
When arranging lighting, you can use built-in ceiling lamps. You can supplement the local light source with floor lamps, sconces, wall and floor lamps.
