DIY Loft style lamps

We present to you a new modern trend - loft-style lamps. What they can be and how they can be used to create a stylish interior design - find out further!

Loft interiors are gradually but surely becoming popular around the world. This style is defined by “masculine” colors, brick walls, high ceilings and bohemian decor. Bright paintings, green plants and beautiful textiles add warmth and coziness to rough industrial floors, walls, and ceilings. Such a contrast always causes delight and interest, so it is not surprising that the loft style today is found not only in attics and converted industrial premises (where it originated), but also in the most ordinary homes. In addition, the distinctive elements of this style, such as wallpaper and lamps, become fashionable in themselves and are used for original decoration of houses and apartments.

What kind of lamps can be used in the loft style?

To begin with, it is worth noting that loft-style lamps and loft-style lamps are different concepts. The lofts themselves often use luxurious classic chandeliers, sconces and pendant lamps, which simply look stunning against the backdrop of brick and concrete walls. But if you are buying loft-style lamps for a modern or eclectic interior, then here we will talk about those models that can bring a creative loft atmosphere to your home:

  1. Industrial or industrial lamps;
  2. Chandeliers and lamps in retro or vintage styles;
  3. Stylish lamps with a long cord or a simple glass shade;
  4. Some modern and designer lamps in loft style.

Let's take a closer look at each variety with the following 35 photos of loft-style lamps in the design of apartments and houses.

DIY Loft style lamp

Dear visitors to the site “Visiting Samodelkin”, from the master class presented by the author you will learn how to make a unique lamp in the “Loft” style.
Today, the topic of making all kinds of lamps, both for decorative and practical purposes, is popular among young people. Basically, there is a race for uniqueness, so that the product is one and only)

So our author came up with the idea of creating a lamp for his room; it will be made in a new style for us, “Loft”. For this reason, the master spent a lot of time to collect all the necessary components, found and exchanged brass taps and wings from friends in garages, bought them at a flea market at a reasonable price, ordered Edison lamps on Aliexpress, as well as cartridges with relays and wings for adjusting the brightness lamp glow. I waited for the parcel for a couple of months, when it arrived I was full of happiness, but when checking one of the sockets was defective, namely the relay was faulty and when screwing in the light bulb it simply exploded, it’s good that I checked it with a regular light bulb and not an Edison one)))

So, let's look at what exactly the author needed to create the lamp?

Materials

1. Edison lamps 3 pcs. 2. brass water taps 3 pcs. 3. valve 4 pcs. 4. pressure gauge 2 pcs. 5. paint in cans (black and gold) 6. electrical wire in a braided insulator 7. squeegee 8. nickel 2 pcs. 9. cartridge with relays and golden wings 3 pcs 10. crosses, corners, tees

Tools

1. welding machine 2. gas wrench 3. pliers 4. screwdriver 5. sandpaper 6. file 7 hacksaw 8. drill

Step-by-step instructions for assembling a lamp in the “Loft” style with your own hands.

As already mentioned above, the author spent a very long time looking for, ordering, exchanging components, buying something in a store, in order to save money, looking for old, no longer needed plumbing elements from friends and acquaintances in garages, that’s actually what I managed to collect. Slopes, nickels, crosses, tees, corners, and an old rusty tap.

The author used the nickel to attach the lamp to the wall, namely, it was welded to the bracket and holes were drilled.

In fact, the bracket will be made, then the finished version will be shown, but for now it’s just trying on the parts.

I bought a couple of pressure gauges from junk dealers at a flea market.

The pressure gauges were no longer working, and even this is unnecessary in principle, they play a purely decorative role, the price for them was also symbolic, which is quite good.

I ordered Edison lamps and sockets with gold-colored relays from the Chinese on Aliexpress.

The parcel took a long time, about 2 months, after unpacking the sockets, it was immediately decided to check their functionality and when screwing the light bulb into one of the sockets connected to the network, an explosion occurred, that is, the light bulb blew, and the reason was that the relay in the socket was faulty and It was impossible to restore it, so I had to order again and wait 2 months :(

Old metal taps from taps were found and exchanged, bought from flea dealers.

It was difficult to find old brass water taps, and I was lucky enough to get rich by as many as 3 pieces.

A braided cord was also purchased.

Two cans of spray paint (black and gold)

The pressure gauge was disassembled before painting.

Slopes are welded onto nickels.

Parts that have been painted are thoroughly sanded and degreased.

First, elements such as taps and valves are painted gold.

Everything is ready for assembly, one can of paint was enough for the entire painting.

The base is assembled from crosspieces, corners and tees.

The base is painted black.

After the paint has dried, you need to pull the electrical wires inside the pipe and lead them to the sockets.

Then the base is attached to the wall and gold-plated taps are installed, the wire is pulled out.

The sockets are connected and the Edison lamps are screwed in.

We turn on the light, everything is on.

It turned out very cool.

Light pours from a water tap, cool)

In the twilight.

The long-awaited moment has arrived and it’s beautiful)

As you can see, it is quite possible to make a lamp in the “Loft” style yourself, you just need to first collect more old plumbing elements in order to save as much as possible. You have step-by-step instructions, so let’s take it and do it. Be brave, friends!

Industrial or industrial style lamps

Industrial lighting is one of the iconic decorative features of lofts, since this type of home was originally built in abandoned factory and warehouse buildings. You could even say that this is typical loft style lighting. As a rule, these lamps are distinguished by a simple, even rough design, and good functionality (swivel mechanisms, adjustable fittings, etc.).

Today, industrial or industrial lamps are increasingly chosen when they want to add some flair to modern interior design. They look especially interesting in the design of the kitchen and dining area - above the dining table or kitchen island.

Also, pendant lights in an industrial loft style can successfully decorate your modern or minimalist bathroom, but in the living room and bedroom it is better to combine them with bright eclectic decor so as not to lose the coziness and warmth of your home environment.

Light like a brush in the interior

No matter how thoughtful the interior is, the final chord in it is always played by lighting. This is a palette, a brush, and inspiration.

Interior of a room in the Loft style using different types of Loft lamps for lighting zoning

With just one skillful beam, you can color a room with the right atmosphere. But the same beam, directed incorrectly, can ruin the entire situation. Loft is no exception to this rule, where lighting plays almost a primary role.

The correct selection of lighting in the Loft style will create a cozy atmosphere and enliven the room

Like any work of art, light needs a frame. For a lived-in warehouse space, which the Loft is in the concept, “industrial” motifs are ideal. Lamps made in this style will be the spice that completes the interior dish.

Vintage and retro lamps

Who still has simple lamps and shades from Soviet times? You can save both money and time by using old vintage and retro lamps to create a loft style in your home. These antique lanterns, pendant lamps and wire structures can be repainted to stand out against brick walls, or left in a distressed and rusted state to add intrigue to the clean and sleek surfaces of modern interior design.

Loft style lamps: features, variety, options

1 - Particular attention should be paid to lamps. In open interiors, they zone space and perform a decorative function. Since the ceilings in factory premises are high, loft-style lamps usually have a chain or long wires, depending on the characteristics of the lamp. If you illuminate a room with a ceiling lamp from a height of several meters, then it will be of little use. Therefore, the light source needs to be lowered closer to the area that it should illuminate, for example a dining table or sofa group.

2 - It is very convenient to use floor lamps. Local lighting is a necessary thing. They can be moved to the desired area: for reading or communication. Their design may resemble the spotlights used by photographers in the studio; with fabric shades and wooden base; or something functional in the constructivist style. The main thing is the harmonious atmosphere of the entire interior and elements.

3 - To provide additional lighting, in addition to pendant lamps with metal shades, rotating spotlights are used in the room, installing them on the ceiling, directly on beams, or stretching string systems between the walls.

4 - Pendant lamps with hanging wires in fabric braiding look very nice. Usually they are placed in a group to obtain the required level of lighting and assemble into an effective composition.

5 - If your soul requires a chandelier with crystal pendants or a lamp more reminiscent of an art object, do not hesitate to place them in the interior. Undoubtedly, they will become the central element of the interior, attracting attention. But there must be one lamp (if several, then the same), otherwise they will “argue” with each other and draw attention from one to another. In open spaces, you need to place accents and highlight zones that are important in meaning.

Important:

If you want to choose loft-style lamps for your living space, and not regret the wrong choice, it is better to have with you a visualization of the future interior in order to choose the most suitable lamps for it, not only in design, but also in functionality.

Long cord lamps and glass shades

Another fashion trend for 2020! Why even bother with lamps when some modern incandescent lamps themselves are suitable for interior decoration? Hang several of these stylish light bulbs on long cords and voila - a stylish loft-style lamp is ready to serve you! For greater effect, the light bulbs are decorated in transparent glass shades, and the cords are wrapped around various decorative structures or secured with hooks on the ceiling.

Loft style lighting

In the 40s of the 20th century, there was an acute housing problem in America. People were forced to live in industrial premises with high ceilings, huge windows and bare walls. It is this period that can be considered the time of the appearance of the loft interior style. Translated from English, this word means “attic”. However, modern apartments and loft houses are not at all similar to it. Today lofts are a harmonious, original, stylish space. This style is most often chosen by representatives of creative professions and extraordinary individuals, fans of minimalism and supporters of freedom.

The following features are characteristic of a loft:

  • lots of open space;
  • big windows;
  • “bare” concrete or brick walls;
  • lack of pretentiousness and decor;
  • the use of metal, natural wood, glass in furniture and decoration;
  • muted and dark palette: black, white, beige, gray, brown, terracotta, brick colors;
  • bright, sometimes flashy accents of red, purple, yellow, green.

Light in a loft interior, along with other elements, is important. The unspoken motto of this style is more brightness and rays! If you want to create a truly authentic environment, consider your lighting carefully. In stores you can find a lot of chandeliers, lamps, sconces, but not every product will fit harmoniously into the loft interior. For this style, it is unacceptable to use “cute” and beautiful lighting fixtures with flowers and monograms. On the contrary, the lamp should look careless, rough, “clumsy”, as simple and concise as possible.

Another important point is the presence of diffused light. The loft is a large space. Often it combines several functional areas at once. For this reason, every corner of the room should be well lit. A bright, eye-catching score is unnecessary. It is better to put several floor lamps in the room, hang a couple of sconces or several stylish and small chandeliers on the walls. Thanks to this technique, you will get a “bohemian” atmosphere, which free artists and musicians love so much.

Material and texture of lamps

Loft is often called industrial style. In such a room there is often a feeling of unfinished work, unfinished repairs, and creative disorder. However, in the loft everything is always in its place. Even decorative elements made from water pipes, tires, strange appliances and devices look harmonious.

The most popular loft material is metal. It is used to make furniture, art objects and, of course, lamps. Wood for chandeliers is not welcome, and it is unlikely that you will be able to find such a product quickly. Besides, it will cost a pretty penny. According to the rules of the loft, materials should be the most budget-friendly, without pretensions to luxury and chic. Therefore, it is better to buy the simplest and most inexpensive lamps in the loft style in the interior. A classic crystal chandelier looks ridiculous in a loft interior. Ordinary light bulbs on a wire, in a glass “stand” or a rusty pipe are welcome. The design idea can be absolutely anything. The main thing is that it resonates with the general concept. The trend of the 2020 season is water pipes converted into lighting fixtures.

Design

Depending on the installation location, loft lighting in the interior is divided into three categories:

  • ceiling;
  • wall;
  • floor

The mounting point of the lighting fixture is selected based on its “mission”. For example, it is best to illuminate the work surface in the kitchen with an LED strip; pendant lamps in a loft interior look good above the dining area. In the living room, it is good to install diffused light that will highlight individual zones. Soft boxes are appropriate in bedrooms.

Loft-style chandeliers in the interior are characterized by simplicity of form. There are quite a lot of them, and the following can be distinguished:

View Implementation of the concept
Edison lamps in a loft interior Ordinary incandescent light bulbs, which are stylized as antique. They have a visible spiral and a long cord.
Flashlight Incandescent lamp on a wire frame.
Shine A metal, artificially aged plate that serves as a lampshade.
Candles Loft lamps in the interior in the form of candlesticks.
Spotlight Soffits, which are used to organize the illumination of art objects or objects of art.
Headlamp A car headlight integrated into a home environment.
Cone-shaped lampshades They are often floor-mounted and used to create warm, slightly dim and uniform lighting.

A spider chandelier looks impressive in a loft interior. It is not named this way by chance. Externally, such a lighting device looks like a huge spider, spreading its legs along almost the entire ceiling perimeter. Guests will also remember well the designer hoop chandelier, along the edges of which there are electric “candles”. It can brightly illuminate a large space, which is what is required in a loft.

You can make a lamp for a loft yourself using available materials: plastic and iron pipes, metal sheets, twine, rope, chains. Imagine, combine materials and textures, create new forms. But don't overdo it in decor and design. Remember that everything ingenious is simple!

Color

For such an extraordinary interior style as loft, the most suitable colors are black and white. This is the palette that many designers prefer. White ones are more suitable for those cases when you do not need to focus attention on the ceiling or walls. Black lighting fixtures, on the contrary, allow you to create an accent, a bright spot in the room.

There is no need to limit yourself to these two colors. Floor lamps or track lamps in the loft style can be in a variety of shades: red, aquamarine, orange. In this case, the rule applies - the brighter the better. Also pay attention to acidic and neon colors, which will help emphasize the uniqueness and originality of the interior.

It is not necessary that the chandelier or lamps be the same shade as the walls of the room or furniture. It is better to focus on the material of manufacture. For example, if the base for a floor lamp is some kind of industrial device or pipe, then leave it untreated, without finishing. Metal, like chrome elements, have a unique appearance. If you really want to, paint the surface golden or dusty silver.

The loft has three “branches”. These are boho, glamorous loft and industrial interior styles. Each of them has its own color scheme, which can be used when organizing lighting.

Style Palette
boho Terracotta, brick, bright shades in textiles and small elements (for example, on a lampshade).
Glamor loft Pastel colors, beige, gray, ivory. The design of the lamp can be different, up to a “grandmother’s chandelier”.
Industrial Cold, metallic colors, artificially aged and unpainted textures. The use of wire, ropes, and pipes is encouraged.

Dimensions

There are no specific requirements for the size of loft lamps. It all depends on the concept of the interior, the design idea and the taste of the owners of the house. Large ceiling chandeliers are often chosen. They are able to illuminate the entire room. Small light bulbs that hang on a thin “leg” from the ceiling are also popular. If you use several small lamps or chandeliers, then there should be a lot of them at once. This is the only way to ensure the proper level of brightness.

How to choose lighting for different rooms in loft style

There are rules that must be followed. So, if you want to create an authentic interior, remember:

  • wooden chandeliers are not acceptable. Natural wood makes the furnishings luxurious, which contradicts the laconic “attic” style;
  • take a closer look at the minimalist pendants. They look good in the kitchen, illuminating the dining table;
  • A loft chandelier, lamps or floor lamp should not have any decorations or decorative elements. Rough, “uncouth”, unfinished designs with a creative “zest” are what you need.

Loft lighting in the interior is not intended for decoration.
It performs a purely practical function. Often, lighting is installed at several levels: a chandelier is placed on the ceiling, small sconces on the walls, and lamps on the floor. Devices should not be lost in space. On the contrary, they should attract attention. They must become art objects and accents in the interior. Cozy loft living room
The living room is the center of the house. Family, guests, relatives gather here to relax and chat together. Soft and diffused light can create a warm and friendly atmosphere even in such a cold interior as a loft. Use a floor lamp with a metal leg. Place it next to a sofa or armchair for comfortable reading in the evenings. A chest of drawers or nightstand can be “decorated” with table lamps.

Calm loft bedroom

The bedroom is a place for sleep, rest, and relaxation. It would seem that a loft is not suitable for this room. The play of light helps to “soften” this style, making it cozy, comfortable, and calm. The room should have a central lighting fixture. A good option is a chandelier on flexible cables. Lamps on bedside tables and sconces can be used as auxiliary elements. It is desirable that they be metallic, bronze or copper in color.

Lighting in the loft kitchen

In the kitchen, LED lighting and several lamps hanging above the table are appropriate. Floor lamps with legs, table lamps and candelabra are not appropriate here. Exclusively ceiling structures that will create bright lighting.

What's in the hallway?

Here, one lamp and several “auxiliary” sconces are enough. A model of a street lamp and an Edison lamp will look impressive.

An aluminum chandelier looks great in the room.
It is associated with a factory, industrial premises and adds authenticity to this interior. LED lamp models are also good. They create the feeling of being in an art exhibition or workshop. Such designs are simple, not devoid of originality and originality. The variety of lamps and chandeliers for a loft is amazing. Uncomplicated shapes, clear lines, correct geometry - this is what should be in a loft house. It’s hard to pass by such a device. Loft chandeliers, sconces, floor lamps, table lamps leave no one indifferent.

Variety of style

Do-it-yourself Loft lamps can be made from various available materials, and this is the beauty of this style. Here are just a few similar examples:

  • An excellent chandelier in the Loft style with your own hands can be made from an old lighting fixture, to which, instead of shades, you attach cups and saucers, placing the lamp inside the cup.
  • The version of the first master class based on a plastic bottle can easily be transformed into an equally interesting DIY Loft style lamp if you use the simplest metal soda bottle instead of a concrete lampshade.
  • Interesting wall options are obtained from simple plumbing pipes, where lamps are inserted into the joints and jumpers.
  • A stylish chandelier in the Loft style is created with your own hands on the basis of a wooden circle, to which wine bottles are attached, with light bulbs inserted inside them.
  • Even the most ordinary grater will be transformed if you turn it upside down and insert a socket with a lamp inside - this option will provide very unusual lighting.

Modern design of lamps in loft style

The simple and laconic modern design of the lamps allows them to fit into almost any interior style. For example, large pendant lights in the shape of a hemisphere or elegant black shades can bring a touch of loft style to a modern room design, but DIY concrete and wood lamps are the perfect addition to an industrial or minimalist space.

Finally, what about a loft-style chandelier? What could it be?

As we said above, the lofts themselves usually use classic crystal chandeliers, creating an exciting contrast against the background of rough wall decoration.

But loft-style chandeliers are usually made of metal, pipes and long wires. We dedicate the last 5 photos in our article to them!

Lamps in the LOFT style in the interior: TOP-20

BOSTON PENDANT

The rough design of the BOSTON PENDANT chandelier is the epitome of a loft. The metal base, which has an industrial feel, echoes the concept of the style with its deliberately exposed pipes and beams. The look is completed by a massive lampshade painted in a dark color.

T6 STEAMPUNK

The uniqueness of the T6 STEAMPUNK chandelier lies in its stylization. The shiny surface of the elongated lampshade and the valves connecting the lamp body to the pendant convey a naval style. Such decor always looks appropriate in a loft filled with unusual things.

INDUSTRIAL EDISON CHANDELIER ROPE

Instead of the usual metal horns there is a cable, instead of lamps with a regular incandescent filament there are Edison lamps. This is what the INDUSTRIAL EDISON CHANDELIER ROPE chandelier looks like, which can bring the necessary ambiance to the atmosphere of the house. All that remains is to choose the number of lamps to impress all guests.

GLASS CHANDELIER SPIDER

The GLASS CHANDELIER SPIDER chandelier is given an atmospheric feel by its black coating and glass shades, which offer a view of the irregularly shaped lamps. Outwardly, it resembles a huge spider. Its “paws” form smooth lines, which softens the impression of the lamp.

INDUSTRIAL EDISON CHANDELIER RETRO

The INDUSTRIAL EDISON CHANDELIER RETRO chandelier is another design improvisation on the theme of spiders. This chandelier is impressive in its size: its diameter is almost 3 m. But the retro lampshades invariably attract attention, bringing regularity and tranquility to the loft.

POLYGON LIGHT

The attractiveness of the POLYGON LIGHT chandelier is given by the unusual shape of the lampshade. Made in the form of a complex geometric figure, it sets the character of the decor. Framed by thin metal lines, the massive lamp appears even larger. The combination of graphics and “emptiness” in the design makes this model in demand in loft design.

DEPT

The DEPT chandelier is a rare model that can impress every loft fan. Its uniqueness lies in the lampshade, which is a metal mesh. It glows beautifully in the yellow hues of the massive lamp.

CRYSTAL CHANDELIER 8

The luxurious CRYSTAL CHANDELIER 8 chandelier, enclosed in a ball of metal rods, will become the main decoration of any loft space. Everything about it is beautiful: from the imitation of candle flames that create a circle, to the pendants made of transparent glass.

MEGA EDISON

What happens if the lamp bases are installed horizontally and not vertically, as usual? MEGA EDISON chandelier with a spectacular design. In this case, the circle to which the lamps are attached is supported by thin wires, forming a lamp with a diameter of 1 meter.

BIG CAGE PENDANT

The loft is surprising in that bold, non-trivial decor is allowed in it. This is the case with the BIG CAGE PENDANT chandelier, whose appearance resembles a bird cage. There is already an improvised firebird inside that will not fly away anywhere.

INDUSTRIAL HOWARD

The INDUSTRIAL HOVARD pendant will help recreate the atmosphere of an abandoned American factory. Its main feature is that it comes in two colors: black and rusty. The last option is especially relevant, since it fully emphasizes the style of the loft.

CAGE MULTI

The combination of metal and fabric lampshade is the main reason for the popularity of the CAGE MULTI chandelier in the design of industrial interiors. Through the patterned surface, the light casts dramatic shadows on the ceiling. This creates a loft with a hint of romance.

FERERO

The FERERO model is difficult to find, which makes it a desirable acquisition for true loft connoisseurs. What makes you admire this lamp? A metal shade painted dark and a vintage lamp with an unusually shaped filament.

MULTICOLOR GLASS

Glass shades in bright colors do not contradict the loft philosophy, which means the MULTICOLOR GLASS collection is another option for decorating a cafe in this style. Choosing the right chandelier is complicated by the variety of shapes. Although you don’t have to stop at just one product. Several lamps hanging at different levels look much more interesting.

GLASS BLACK PENDANT

2 - 3 original pendants, the shades of which are made of smoky glass, will become the main decoration of the kitchen, living room or bar. The glass slightly diffuses the glow of the lamp, creating a relaxing environment. All that remains is to choose the appropriate shape, because the designers of the GLASS BLACK PENDANT series decided not to limit connoisseurs of modern interiors to standard shapes.

GLASS BOTTLE PENDANT

Chandeliers in the shape of glass bottles are quite in the spirit of the loft style. The GLASS BOTTLE PENDANT collection is designed in this direction. The patterns on the glass add additional decorativeness to the pendants. The surface of the lampshades is completely filled with ornaments, which gives them expressiveness and texture.

PENDANT ITALIA GLASS 2

Bold shapes, the use of details typical of the retro trend, muted shades - all this makes PENDANT ITALIA GLASS 2 lamps desirable in an urban interior. It's up to you to hang one piece above the dining table or several along the bar counter.

MONKEY PENDANT

Animalism in chandelier design changes the idea of conventional decor. Thus, the MONKEY PENDANT collection is a story about monkeys made of composite and easily climbing a rope. Against the background of gray concrete walls and minimalist furniture, this pendant looks very authentic.

BETON EDISON LAMP

BETON EDISON LAMP chandeliers are a unity of two materials, without which a loft is impossible. The concrete base, to which the lampshade in the form of a metal mesh is attached, looks unusual and bold. Lamps with elongated and rounded shapes complement the design. Inside them there are several filaments, forming intricate patterns.

BARBARIAN

And the BARBARIAN model closes our top chandeliers for the loft. It resembles the surroundings of pirate ships and medieval castles. But designers value this suspension not only for its atmosphere. It is also impressive in size. The diameter of the chandelier is 75 cm, which makes it a must-have element in the decor of large spaces.

A selection of 20 of the most stylish chandeliers for a loft is in front of you. The only thing left to do is choose a suitable model for decorating the room. Go for it!

Beautiful interior lighting options in the Loft style

Pendant lamps attached to the ceiling act as industrial lighting for the entire room or individual sections of it. Pendant lighting is very suitable for illuminating the kitchen area, especially if they are lamps with dome-shaped shades.

Give preference to pendants; Such chandeliers are widely used for kitchen lighting.

Track lighting or rough-looking overhead lamps can successfully illuminate an office area. But here it is better to use cold light bulbs.

Chandeliers in this style are not so much intended for a decorative role, but as a functional element that can give maximum light to your space.

Small, minimalist table lamps provide cozy lighting for the sleeping area or can be placed in the living room. Here, a metal floor lamp without a lampshade would be a good lighting option with a decorative function.

The ideal combination would be to install a chandelier on the ceiling, walls, or have floor lamps, since together they will provide maximum illumination of the room, which is what is required for this style.

The loft is characterized by a combination of old and new with the introduction of industrial elements and non-standard decorations. It is important to make sure that each light accentuates a specific area.
